Default To hunt a wallow??

I was led by a very nice, 280ish 6x6 bull to this wallow this morning.

He wasn't about to come to any calls so I'm thinking for now the best chance at killing him might be to hang around at the mud hole waiting......

How long in Sept. do you guys think the coast bulls will hit the wallows?

What time of day is the best? I lack a lot of patience....thinking about 3 hours will drive me bug nuts! Which 3 hours would you sit?

If the weather is Hot they are great, once it cools down the wallows do as well, at least that has been what my trail cams tell me.

nice looking wallow, i found one a few years ago on the coast while hunting it hadnt been used in awhile but there was mud thrown every where, i would at least set it the rest of this week its suppose to be warm, find a good game trail that you think the bulls use to get to the wallow at least thats what i would do, good luck its worth a shot.

Hard to tell...I see wallows like that around here..Most draws have seeps and creeks and I suspect that yours is a wallow of oppurtuninty...

He found a likely spot, tore the heck out of it and had a good time...Probably won't be back if there is plenty of likely spots in your area...Areas with less wet spots and he may frequent it again.....

Good luck though,I would like to see that bull in a pic..

Bow hunting mag is full of storys about ending a bulls life at a wallow. If you could get a stand up above and get in quiet it would be a very worthwile place to sit and cow call as the rut approches the cows will use them too.

I find alot of one time use only wallows here in the Cascades. I only know of a couple wallows that get "hit" every year, and more than once a year.

Over east though I know of LOTS of traditional wallows that get hit every year, and on a regular basis. Over east the bulls like coming to the wallows at midday, when most hunters are back at camp sleeping or drinking beer.

Put your Tcam up on it and see what happens over the next week.

Yep, bear tracks in the mud since the bull wallowed last. I need a bow bear too so that would work.

My thoughts exactly. I put my cam on the alder behind the wallow this afternoon. If he comes back the pics should be great. Sat in pile of brush till dark and all was quiet but I didn't expect him back today after he herded up his cows and took off when I bugled. He answered me every time but was pretty intent on taking the ladies away from the intruder. He didn't go far though....

I see a lot of such wallows and have never had much confidence in sitting on them for long since it seems like when I recheck them there is no new action. In this case this is the bulls bedroom so hopefully if nothing else I will run into him in the near vicinity.

Thanks for the thoughts guys!

I have 5 trail cams set on wallows right now and suspect they will start getting hit this week..Many of them are wallows that get hit every year though...Nothing better then pics off a wallow in my opinion....Get em Joe!!!

I guess you should give it a try at the same time of day you found him there and see what happens after a few days. I'm curious to hear the results.
