Default Penn 965

Are these good reels? Are they worth the $? What would you use it for?

I love my 965. I use it for salmon and keeper sturgeon, spooled with 65# Tuff, usually fished off a Loomis BBR 964C. The reel is bullet proof, owner servicable and tough as nails.

My friend has the 965 and loves it. So I bought the 975 when they came out and I love it too. I use it for salmon, keeper sturgeon and last year I used it to cast swim baits to tuna and it worked great. I spooled it with 30Lb mono. It is well worth the price. Shop around, I found my 975 at Englund Marine (Newport) 4th of July sale 2 years ago for $179.

I have 2 955s and 2 965s.....They are absolutely fantastic reels. I too spool mine with 65# power pro and the 965 holds about 300 yards. Smooth drag and bullet proof. I've had mine for 3 years now.

The 955-975 series Penns are world-class reels, in my opinion. I have had very few in for service other than replacing drags (which last a good long time under most conditions) and regular maintenance. They are well finished and really smooth with a nice loud clicker. You can't beat them for the money-and they're still made in USA!
