Default Wickiup 8/27-8/31

We had a group camping trip at Wickiup. Since it was more of a friends and family trip I only fished parts of some days.

8/27 – I fished by myself for about 4 hours and stayed mostly between the Deschutes and Davis arms. The water temperature was 63 F at the surface which seems cool for this time of year. I was fishing 10 feet deep on the downrigger and picked up most of my fish in less than 30 feet of water. I caught 6 or 7 fish. One on an orange hoochie and 4 on a green wedding ring with a green blade. Two came on a Criplure long-lined behind the boat with no weight.

8/29 – I teamed up with Moknots for about 4 hours. We fish from first light to about 10:15 and fished mostly below the confluence of the two arms. Moknots tried a new hoochie and it was the hot lure. It was black with a little section of white/glow on the bottom. I caught a couple on the green wedding ring and then a couple on a string of black/white/glow beads with no blade. We finished with 12 fish and fished at 20 some feet most of the time.

8/30 – I fished with a father and son who were camping with us. We stayed in the Deschutes arm the 2.5 hours we fished. The fish were thick but shallow. The wind was blowing and the surface water was still at 63 F. Fish were caught on the same green wedding ring spinner, a blue glow hoochie that I changed to black with a sharpie and a watermelon Apex long lined behind a set of cowbells. I also caught two fish on a glow maggot. We were fishing 10 feet of the downrigger and about 30 feet behind the boat. We finished with 7 fish.

8/31 – I fished with friend of my wife who loves to fish. The fish were still in the channel but did not want to bite. We found biters just out from the 10 mph buoy at the mouth of the arm. The surface water temp dropped to 55 F due to the nonstop wind over the weekend. It was pink hoochie kind of day. We fished 6 feet down on the downrigger and about 50 feet behind the boat. A hot double glow pink hoochie was the hot lure. I put on a standard pink hoochie and was not getting bit. Realizing I had on a different dodger I switched to the same kind and started to get bites. We landed 8 fish in 3 hours and lost one at the boat and had two doubles.

Most of the fish taken were in the middle of the day. They were mostly 14 inches but very deep and thick and put up a great fight. The meat quality of most was still very good. A few blush bucks were caught. Some 12 inch fish with loose scales were also taken and I suspect they are next year’s fish. At least I hope so.

I also caught almost no fish on corn. If this trend keeps up I’ll leave the corn at home.

Also note that both of the major boat ramps are closed for work. You’ll have to launch across from South Twin resort or down by the dam. Which is a shame because if the fishing should be good for a few more weeks.

Thanks for for the full report Brian! Nice fishing with you. At least this time you were polite enough to let me catch some of the fish (remembering our cabin fever trip in March to LBC where you blanked me 3 - 0). Danged green bladed spinner.

Thanks for reporting. This might be a good choice for the next (probably last) koke trip of the summer/fall. Haven't made it over there yet this year. Time's a-growin' short.

HI Guys

So what boat ramps are open at wickiup? Are they difficult to get a small (13 ft) boat in and out of?

This sounds like the hot place to go. Thanks for all the tips

You’ll have to launch across from South Twin resort or down by the dam. You should have no troubles launching a small boat.

Great report FRG, thanks for sharing. Sounds like you got some good fishing in with family and friends. You even let Moknots catch a few, you must of forgot to leave the hook protectors on his lures! I will have to give Wickiup a try one of these days. Thanks again.

Brian: I appreciate all the good reports this year.

Hopefully, next year you can show me around.

If you are in this area this winter, let me know and I will try to put a trip together for steelhead.
