Default Mussel harvesting:

When I was a kid living in Tillamook we used to go somewhere around Rockaway and pick large mussels from the rocks. We would build a fire on the beach and drop the mussels in the hot coals and wait for them to pop open. I remember how great it was and have always wanted to do it again. I just cant recall where we were exactly. Does anyone have any ideas or experience collecting mussels on the coast? Where can we go and are they safe to eat right now?

We picked some last year just on the north end of tunnel by Falcon Cove (few miles south of Cannon Beach). Tons of them there. Very tasty!!

I don't know about mussles, but I do know that the dimonic acid levels were way up earlier this year. I called the "shellfish hotline" & they said razor clams SHOULD NOT be eaten any time soon because they retain the toxin for a long time. Bay clams apparently aren't exposed to quite as much of the acid & clean out quicker. I didn't ask specificially about mussles. There is a recording you can listen to at 503 - 986 - 4728,
or you can talk to a real person (my preference) at 503 - 986 - 4720. Hope this helps.....
