Default What are your first kill rituals?

Our family had us drink a cup of the deers blood. Whats yours?

My step son got his first kill and I will post pics later, he got a spike deer!

I swallored a lil blood on my first deer. Not sure if I'll make my boy do it or not. I guess I'll run it by him and see what he says.

Elbows deep in blood and guts. You gut/skin your first one by yourself. With no help other than Dads watchfull eye. Then you pack it out solo.

After the first everyone helps in whatever may need to be done from gutting, skinning, packing, cutting and wrapping or what ever may come about.

Of coarse there is some serious fun to be had by those that are watching the first timer, easy going clean humor. That gets even more fun when you get back to town and people start looking in the truck while your are stopping for something to drink on the way home.

One year while the first timer was sleeping on the way back, we got out a bit of intestine(throughly cleaned in the creek first) and tied it around the young fellows neck, and we put some blood war paint marks on his face. When we went into the store people thought that he was very interesting, he didn't understand until a young lady took him by the hand and put him in front of a mirror. When he saw that, the red blood marks on his face blended right in real quick.

we always cook up the heart of a elk it is really a delicacy and the fresher the better. It was some sort of superstition that has been started long ago . every hunter in the party par takes after the meat is baged and hung.

Any time an animal is taken is reason enough to step back and pay homage to God's fine creation and a stalk well orchestrated.
Now pass the brandy bottle my way.
Life is good.

After that, it's a tag team affair on the feild dressing, cigars in mouth.....arms bloodied.
Life is good.

Once the work is done, it's time to hike out and go get the mules....and a cold Henrys PR while the heart & liver are set to soak in salt water.
Once the meat is back to camp & taken care of, stock watered and turned loose to feed, it's time to crack another cold Henerys while dinner is started.
Life is good.

Fresh heart/liver smothered in sautied Walla Walla sweet onions, fried spuds covered in cream corn is the tradition. Followed by still steaming dutch oven Huckleberry cobbler topped w/ Cool Whip and a cup fresh coffee & Carolines spiked w/ a splash of Canadian. ..... and another cigar.
Life is good.

Bed usually comes late after recounting the stalk and cards played right.
Life is good.

Half of my family (the hunting half) is German, so we follow some Germain/European hunting traditions. A hunter is greeted (especially when successful) with "Waidmann's Heil!", which is the hunter's greeting. Also, we practice Der Letzte Biss (the last bite) where a moment of silence is given to the animal after some of its typical forage is placed in its mouth. The animal is also covered with the bough of a tree to signify that it is claimed by the hunter. Also, a piece of the bough is dipped in the blood of the animal and placed on the left side of the hat, not to be removed until sundown.

Sounds a lot like my camp too, minus the cigars. I vividly remember the one time I shot a 7pt. on Thanksgiving day. Just me and one of our older party members. He was back at the pickup when I shot the bull, I dressed him out and Owen found me with the pack boards. Of coarse we have to have a Victory drink, another at the pick up, back to the bull and another Victory drink at the pickup, one more quick pack for the antlers and another Victory drink! Now a days, maybe a little snort at the rig and then the major celerbration back home or in camp. Don't want a DUII.

I had to gut/skin all by myself like others. Plus had to pack my first deer out all by myself. Thank goodness it was a blacktail spike! That pack about killed me at 12 years old as it was. Not like packing the deer was enough but I had gun and gear in hand as well. Looking back I wouldn't change it for the world. One of the better days of my life for sure.

I try to keep this tradition, but it seems that my dad and I are the only ones who have followed through! Maybee that is why we are the only ones who kill elk every year

First Elk you should cut the heart out and tip up to drink the remaining blood. Then a bite out of the heart (since the heart is very tough, I recommend using a knife to cut a piece out of it... I almost lost my only two teeth trying to take a bite out of my firsts elk heart)

This will make you a better hunter. Unlless you puke because you can't get over the taste of salt and iron from the blood

A few rips off the "kill bottle". This is done on your first, second, third, and every kill afterwards, including anyone elses kills.

Nice,

I was always told you kill it you gut it. Although I was teased when I got my first deer when I was 12, I was told that I had to drink the blood. I never did.

Not to be a downer but why do people think we hunters are blood thirsty killers? I mean if we don't want a duck contest because we don't want the "numbers" to give us a bad image, why the blood & gut stories? Personally I think some things might be best told by campfire and not on a public forum such as ifish but thats just me.

Me and my family never have had or do have any first kill rituals but i was with some friends and they bury the heart. They said that it returns the animals soul back to the earth.

Well, when I was 14yrs old, according to my step-dad, it was a ritual to eat one of the testicles of your first buck..... Guess I'm a horrible hunter for breaking tradition!
