First bow Mule Deer for my son
The two oldest boys and I headed over to our old rifle hunting grounds to try mule deer with the boy for the first time. We've been meaning to do it for a while just hadn't got around to it. We usually spend all of September chasing elk but decided we needed to give one weekend to deer this year. I think I want to go back on my next vacation in two weeks!!
We set up camp at a location where we could hunt from camp in three different directions and all headed out at first light opening morning. About 6:55 am I get a call on the radio saying buck down! Ben had headed up from camp and was able to get 30 yards from this guy. A 400 yard drag to camp and we had him skinned and hanging by 9:00 am. Not bad for a first deer hunt with the bow.
This picture shows the chute he was coming down when he spotted him. He was between the rocks and trees above the buck.

Right On! Good lookin buck! I like real symetrical 3's, just something neat about them.
Hey, don't need your honey hole info, but could you PM me a vague area (I'm not hunting) That last pics looks very familiar, I grew up in that country

Re: First bow Mule Deer for my son
I spend the entire weekend stalking mule deer and have found a whole new appreciation for the animal. It is my new opinion that any archery mule deer is a feat given the type of terrain they inhabit and just how close one needs to be.
That is a fine buck and my hat is truly off to your son

Re: First bow Mule Deer for my son
Thanks guys! I am really happy for Ben. He has to work full time until college starts so he won't get much time to hunt this year. Hopefully he can squeeze in a bull elk around home. We'll see........

I saw one 3x2 that was similar in size that was rubbed out and a big fork that was half rubbed. All the other bucks were still in velvet. The one Ben killed was the largest we saw though.
BTW - The hat he is wearing is the one he got for getting his pic in the OHA magazine with his first Bow bull a few years ago.

Re: First bow Mule Deer for my son
Way cool. I took my step son over to the eastside as well, but the bucks were too early for a shot or to far.
That's hunting.
