Default Help the New Kid

Hi all. I'm an avid light tackle fisherman looking into relocating to the Northwest. In my never to be humble opinion, the only thing better than fishing is eating the catch. That, of course is assuming that you catch somehing.

I'm very interested in the types of saltwater fishing available for the light line guys. I've searched the web and can find the halibut, salmon, steelhead and ling cod. Are there other fisheries as well? Do the harbors hold fish?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

First we make Californians walk the plank  then we have a beer with 'em

There are several verities of perch and rockfish as well as flounder in the bays.

I see I've opened a couple of cans of worms here. I'm also amazed at the quick response to my post. I guess everybody up north is retired with nothing to do..

As to how light? One of my passions is to get in my float tube and kick around for our California Halibut. A much smaller cousin to the Pacific. I usually fish 6# or 8# and catch fish as big as 25 pounds. Those are the exception most are in the 3-8 pound but loads of fun on the light line. I do chase larger game and seldom use anything heaver than 20 pound for the offshore species.

Walk a plank? As long as there's a fishing hole at the end I don't have a problem with that. I'll go you one better and if I don't get splinters in my feet I'll buy the beer!

Is the herring pickled or is the water clean?

I can see that this group is about as serious as I am. Thanks for the quick responses. Maybe I can learn something here. Maybe not.

Welcome!

Story Amana, story. Gotta cough one up or Miss B Haven will jump all over ya.

Orange, huh? Lessee... we had a guy from the bay area come up for one of our tunaholics anonymous meetings. Oh, and he attended some work related function while he was here, but we know the real reason for his trip! Anyway, if you get up this way, give us some notice and we'll throw together a social for ya.

HeHe - Captain Amana - You bring the float tube, I'll take ya out to the Halibut spot!
 How fast can you kick that thing. Maybe some light line Tuna fishing?

Seriousley, I doubt you'll be doing much of that up here in the Salt water. Lot's of oppertunity for light line/float tube action in the lakes up here though. Some nice trout fishing around the mountain lakes and east side of the Cascades both WA and OR.

If you wanna fish the salt up here you better get a bigger float tube. Perferably one that keeps your feet dry, say an 18-20 footer with about 150 hp or so.

Cough one up? A story? What kind do you want Pilars Mate? All fishermen have stories you know!

My first float tube was called "Speed Bump" then I got a bigger one and named it "Bobber" but the one I fish now is "Whoopie Cushion".

Sounds as though I'm going to have to change around some of my fishing techniques. Change is good - sometimes, and I'm willing to bend but not over.

Are there any good, local how too sites I should check out?

Local how to? You've found it! Just do a search on any species availble here in the Pac NW and you'll find how to. Everything from where and when to what to use and how to rig it.

There are no other internet sites up here!!!

Just this one www.Ifish.net

Great. Thanks for the heads up. Guess I need to spend some time in the archives!

My wife will like that.

I think herring in the bay on light trout outfits is about as light as I get. Of course we use them for bait for the real fish.
