Default Bottom fishing - Newport

I took out some family members on May 3rd for some bottom fishing, crabbing, and herring.

I found a nice pinnacle a mile North of the jetty where we drifted past several times. Got into some lingcod using herring. Nothing big but 2 keepers for 6 fish. The rock cod jigs and shrimp flies didn't seem to be attracting bass or any other thing very well. I eventually chunked some herring for the jigs and flies, which finally caught a black bass and a sculpin. Has anyone else had good luck using them?

We got 6 crab north of the jetty and 2 in the bay for 8 total.

Herring - we only managed to get 1 keeper out of trying 5 spots.

That would be one of my favorite ling cod spots. What you were on was the north reef. I have caught some very nice Cabezon there and the lings always seem to be around the legal limit or just under. Be careful when going north from the jetty. There is a sunken barge and other obstructions. My landlord flipped his zodiac and lost $$$$$ worth of dive gear as well as having to be rescued by the Coast Guard. Just watch along the length to make sure there is no hint of breakers and you should be fine.

Over the Halibut opener two weeks ago I caught three nice Sea Bass at the same time (triple) using a shrimp fly setup. I used red and yellow tipped with muscles that I peeled off of a float that I found on our way back from the Chicken Ranch.

Herring in the bay are an incoming and high slack tide target. Once the tide turns and starts running out the bite shuts off. We have had good luck using Sabiki rigs that are available at the South Beach store. At least that is my experience with them. We have had good luck by the green buoy near the Coast Guard station just accross from the South Beach Marina entrance.

I hope this helps,

Good luck.

Skipper, Going north from the jetties is not good for many reasons.

1. There is only one reef that runs straight north from the jetty to the light house.

2. It has several places where it will break and can swamp you if you are not aware of these points.

3. The fishing is never as good as the south system because of the sewer outflow from Newport and Georgia Pacific. Bass on the north reef tend to be much wormier.

The south reef system is vast and goes clear to Seal Rock. There are as many as 15 seperate reef systems and they all hold a lot of fish. All you need to do is watch your scope and you will find rocks, pinnicles, reefs and structure of all kinds where there are tons of fish.

I could give you numbers but that isn't necessary. A good fisherman will be very successful in the South system. Good luck.

Another new dog!

Man we are gonna need a bigger kennel!

FishwT, what is your favorite ocean fish? Have you done any ocean boating and are you prone to sea sick?

Come to the Tunaholics meetings next Friday and find a boat to ride on, meet the guys and girls and tell us a story.

We had goodluck fishing off the Jetty yesterday. Caught 4 good size seabass. Nothing else is biting and they fight agressively. Two red and two black. Fishing off the shore is a lot of fun cuz I don't own a boat and hardly ever have a chance to go out. If anyone is willing to get me out there. Gas and other expenses won't be a problem.
