Any Tuna this year??
I really want to get out on a tuna boat this year (never have yet) and was wondering if anyone has been keeping up with the water temps. Is it going to be better than last year?? Hope so. When will it start if it's going to.

Re: Any Tuna this year??
Yea no kidding, UG.
So Bendman - we'll know when the fish are here when someone catches the first one. As smart-alec as that sounds, it's the truth. We'll watch the reports from San Diego, Morro Bay, & Monterey as they get them earlier than us. It's looking pretty normal so far. Albacore being caught just below the Mexican border right now. Just be ready from about July 1st on.

Re: Any Tuna this year??
Just to keep the discussion going, here is a link to the El Nino/La Nina page and a recent update:
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories/s1147.htm
Gosh, I don't want to pour cold water on the whole tuna thing, but it seems that El Nino has gone bye bye and the forecast is for a "La Nina" to develop.
However, as far as the sea surface temps are concerned right now, everything does seem to be on schedule with albacore recently being bagged by the 1 1/2 day boats out of San Diego.
Mark is right...keep looking south. A guy recently went probing off Monterey but came up empty. Those guys will keep trying as long as warmer water (58-60) is within their reach.

Re: Any Tuna this year??
On the way back from the Chicken Ranch during day 2 of the opener Drifty noticed we were in 55 degree water and he caught a Tuna..... Sandwich  Hey, at least it didn't come from a can....
No Tuna are allowed to come within 100 miles until I return and get my boat fixed and ready.
See ya in about a month....

Re: Any Tuna this year??
Tuna will always be here......though sometimes not in the numbers we like. I always start looking for tuna when the sea temp is a constant 58 degrees. I believe we will see some of the early go getters like Pilar out looking by the first of July. Last year, I caught my first tuna on July 5th just inside of the Banana. Seventeen miles exactly from the end of the north jetty of Newport. Landed 26 for three of us. It was a hunt and look trip and when I found them jumping and rolling and chasing bait, I said, "um....Capt Mike, I think I'll try this spot!" Albies will surprise you so be reading by July!

My crystal ball says July 11th, 30 miles off Cape Blanco. Two weeks later off the Central Oregon coast.

I'm sticking with June 23 off Depoe. Of course, we won't really know unless the weather lets us get out.

Re: Any Tuna this year??
Jen, I wish I could see it that early also but my models say the traditional date is probably the most likely. I use:
http://polar.wwb.noaa.gov/sst/nepac_sst_oper0.gif
As my predictor. It shows the water as being way south yet. And there is no transpacific wave of water coming from the west.
We had better worry about no upwelling on the coast first. Bad for salmon that we are seeing blue water (dead water) this early.

nice one...give this guy a break!
2weeks ago they had high catches off monteray, ca and they were on the move.
my tuna window starts about july 11 and awakens the sleeping fleet (or cult if you will) and screws up more t/a family plans than one could ever imagine.
i just can't help myself... its too fun to watch the fallout!

Re: Any Tuna this year??
Springers!? Springers!!?? Ha!
Try tuna.. just a little taste... it will make you soar... just like being a bird... don't worry, you won't get hooked on it... just try it once. Really, you can quit any time you like, but you can't live a sheltered life. Man, you gotta live a little. Trust me... just a little taste...
Okay, so I admit it. I'm a tuna pusher. But seriously, springer fishing is fishing . Tuna fishing is a train wreck! If you don't like being all 'rectal cavities' and elbows, DON'T go tuna fishing. If you don't like fighting a fish that's swimming better than 40mph, DON'T go tuna fishing. If you don't like hearing fish slapping on the deck in rapid staccato, DON'T go tuna fishing. If you don't like fish blood spraying everywhere... you definitely DON'T want to go tuna fishing.
Oh, and those are just the lowlights. Let's not even get started with watching sharks basking on the surface, playing with mile long pods of porpoise and/or dolphin, seeing marlin jump or any of the other amazing sites the open ocean has to offer.
C'mon, just one taste? It won't hurt you...

Re: Any Tuna this year??
I'v caught them before but I wasn't trying for them. It's been a while ago. I think we were out fishing for silvers. I'm really looking forward to it  Hopefully I can hook up with one of you guys and get a chance to go out. It's more fun going out on a private boat. I always feel like I'm in kindergardin on charter boats.
