Default Coast Guard- Mini Series on Nat Geo Channel

Just saw in the June issue of National Geographic that they are running a series on the CG.
Sounds like some of the episodes are rescue events and some are from CG training exercises. Might be educational as well as entertaining. Of course- it might just scare the pants off ya too!
13, 1/2 hr episodes - Weds eve at 8:30. Doesn't say what date the series starts though.

Just checked - it's on tomorrow night, titled "Mission Rescue"

Looks like it started on April 2, with 6 segments left including tonight -

Hopefully they will show it again in the future.

I've got a message in to NG to see if they're planning on releasing a tape when the series fishishes on TV.

Went to watch last night on Dish, the guide showed the correct program, but what I got were Vampire Bats!

If you like CG rescue stories (I sure do), then I recommend reading:

Nights of Ice
&
Coming Back Alive

Both are great books by Spike Walker.

another aside ...

Spike Walker's "Working on the Edge" is his first and, for me, his best book. It chronicles his 8 years on Alaska crab boats and includes some very harrowing accounts of CG actions.

Slabquest & Pete,
Thanx for the lead on new literature. I'm going to check it out. Have been looking for a good book. Luke

I agree, "Working on the Edge" is great. Another very good book about commercial fishing in Alaska in the 70's is "Highliners" by William McCloskey.

"Coming Back Alive" is exclusively about CG rescue operations out of Sitka. Included is the "greatest" rescue of all time off the Fairweather Grounds out of Yakutat.

There is a great line in the book where a junior CG guy is complaining to his superior that if they attempt a certain rescue, they won't make it back alive. The officer tells him "the book (CG manual) says we GOT to go out - it don't say nothin about coming back".
