CR help? Stevenson?
I have a hall pass to go fishing tomorrow and am thinking of either going out of Camas/Vancouver or heading up to Stenson. My smallie pursuits have been only fair this year so far and would welcome any advice as to where in general I might concentrate my efforts so as to actually hook up. I have a boat. TIA

Re: CR help? Stevenson?
If you put in at Stevenson, the rocky islands down from Rock creek on the Wa side can be pretty good. The launch at Cascade Locks is easier for thsi area. The River from Stevenson ramp all the way up to the White Salmon at Hood River is full of rocky current breaks, coves, underwater ledges, ect, and are pretty good places to look for bass. The "Fishing Map" of the CR is a good place to look too. I went out Saturday am from the Wind River launch, and it was too windy to be much fun, but it was calmer headed back towards Steveson, as is usally the case. It's good from any of the Wa launches from Stevenson up to Drano lake, but again, the wind can be a real mennace, and it's no place for a small boat on a rough day. The fishing map shows some of the rocky islands up from Stevenson and down from the Wind R.

Re: CR help? Stevenson?
Ditto from Tar Heel. I tried heading up today and putting in a Stevenson. It did not look too inviting. Winds predicted 10-20mph and it was white capping at 10Am. I ended up putting in at Beacon Rock (hoping for shelter from the wind), the dam was wide open and current + wind just pretty much sucked. I wanted to troll worm harnesses for walleye but just couldn't even get the boat set up to make it work.
Based on my few trips if winds are predicted 5-10 mph you should be OK, but over that it's a bit much to try to fish

Re: CR help? Stevenson?
Just checked all the wind report sites and it looks like a green light for tomorrow. Winds under 5 mph until around 2pm, then picking up pretty good. The areas mention above are my picks, from Stevenson on up. If you put in at Cascade Locks and you can get your boat through the culverts at Ash Lake, you might give the lake a try, especially around the culverts if the current is flowing through them. Fish both sides. The west side of the lake it usually good as is the riprap along the hiway.
I have had good luck with lipless cranks there and anywhere along the CR where you have current breaking around something like a point or pilings. The temp is supposed to be in high 40's and low 50's all day so I'd sure have a jacket.

Which wind report sites do you use? I've been using weather.com but hoping there is something a bit more accurate? Thanks

Re: CR help? Stevenson?
i've found most of the web sites are about rt on the wind,w.com, msn weather.... although i hear the wind surfers have one that is real time accuarate. not sure of the url, and you may have to pay for it! some of my best fishing is in the 15-20 mph winds, but it can be a real pain in the rear--spend abot half the time w/ your trolling motor chopping air!
now that it's ollig, we should be getting some reall good bassin!

Re: CR help? Stevenson?
You know I have noticed that none of these sites have any places that give wind speeds on the snake river or passed pendleton. It would be nice if they did, but I do like the sites that you wrote in, I use them alot for the Johnday when I am thinking about going up there.

I also went Monday AM. I started fishing at 6:00 and had a 3 lber and a 2.5 lber by 6:30. Managed to scratch out 5 more keepers by 11:00. The wind wasn't too bad until around 8, and even then not too bad where I was. All the weather sites had it wrong. So, that's not 100%. Still, it's the only way to even begin to guess how it will be.
