28ft Clippercraft
A couple years ago I bought a 28ft clippercraft, 1993 I/O Volvo. I have been outfitting/cosmetic restoring it for the last year or so. Has anyone had any experience with this boat. I have had it out a couple of times but would like to hear how it has performed for others. Is it a boat worth more time and money or should I move on.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
145???? I thought Volvo's were like 270 or 290 for the outdrive numbers. 145 might be hp. of the motor. Clippercraft wood or glass?

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
I owned a 26 ft Clippercraft. and I di the whole bebuild thing.
I like the lines of these boats and the semi V, but I spent a small fortune on stainless screws and bolts.
I did not feel comfortable with the way they build the laps on the sides...I use bolts thru both sheet of plywood and the lap board. I also broke the keel board loose. and bolted it as well. I added 2 inch keel and bolt thru all layers.
I also raised the deck and had the hull foamed, except for an area under the engine.
As you can tell by now...I had concerns about strength....this was a older boat and I may have delt with issues you do not have too.
I do like the lines and the way it rode.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
As far as the volvo outdrive # I will have to go out to the barn and Check tonight. To be honest I have done little with the engine as of yet (runs fine, needs a tune up). You might be right the number on the top of the motor is 240 (I think). I am a little worried about how the boat is put together (structuraly). All the wood is in good shape , no rot or delamination however my level of trust for knocking across rough seas is less than 100%. Will it take a good pounding and remain sound, how can I tell? Wanted to get a "bombproof " aluminum boat but one this size/features would cost way to much. I would love as much imput I can get. I have it restored to the point where I could sell it (looks great) but I am hesitating taking the next step and adding all the bells and whistles needed to fish/cruise to its full potential. Thanks

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
There are fishing boats and look at boats. The two are mutually excludable unless you are Bill Gates.
Boats will always have their problems. Wood boats take a more maintenance to keep after the wood, tupperware and tin boats have less maintenance but have their unique problems.
Just remember two old boating maxims:
The happiest two days of a boat owner: The day he buys a boat and the day he sells it.
BOAT: Break Out Another Thousand (commonly called a boat unit)

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
After what you have gone through, you can call it what ever you want but don't call me late to dinner or fishing....
While I was helping Rich this week I saw a panga tie up next to Rich's boat and he had a Sears battery charger on deck charging his batteries. It about took Rich all his restraint not to throw it in the bay.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
I think the Clippercraft is a great looking boat. About 10 years ago I toured the little factory when it was in Portland. As I remember it they had been in business for many years. The owner had retired and handed the business over to his long time apprentice. They had lots of articles posted of Clippercraft owners who had used the boats in ocean conditions. Things like spending the summer off the West Coast of Vancouver Island and the Inside Passage and raving about the boats seakeeping ability. About two or three years ago I read where a boat builder in Vancouver, WA had purchased the molds and was now making them out of fiberglass. I always got the impression that the basic lapstrake design was a good one. Hope it works out for you. I would love to see it out chasing the briny fish.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
Sensei-san, Rich showed a lot more restraint than I would have. *MY* solution
would have been to pull out the ***** and cut the end off the cord ... and then
I'd inform the Harbor Master about the infraction (most ports have a prohibition
against them critters).
"Somebody cut the end off'n his plug?? Wowzers, I wonder who'd do a thing like
that????"
If I saw it again, I'm pretty sure that the charger would "go for a swim".

Don't forget this one:
"A boat is nothing more than a hole in the water that you pour your money through."
Hmmmmm, lets see now, DB, Jetsled, pontoon boat, 12' rowboat. Yup, plenty of holes around my house.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
Jeez... Do we really have to get serious??? If you are worried about dry rot in a wood boat that you are going to foam, it is best to treat the wood with an anti-fungal first. Either with Git-Rot or regular Jasco anti-termite/anti-fungal green stuff. Then I would fiberglass the cavity to encapsulate the foam. That should stop the dry rot. As Keta says FRESH WATER makes for dry rot not salt.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
Since Puffin is such a low maintenance boat, Pilar probably has lots of extra MFU's lying around his pad for Fish Assassin.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
Water will get in between the wood and the foam and rot out the wood hull. I can tell you this from experience. It will rot from the in side out.YOU WILL NOT NOTICE IT UNTILL IT IS TO LATE.

Re: 28ft Clippercraft
I have admired Clippercraft Boats for years. The fellow that manufactured them was Jim Staley. I have never owned one, but can tell you from experience that they are maintenance monsters. I know guys that owned them and they were always working on them or not. The guys that worked on them were very proud of their boat and bragged on the performance. The guys that didn't work on them experienced lots of rot problems after a few years of neglect. I have had three tupperware Harvey dories, and like the boat, but if Ed Harvey ever made a 22 to 26' hull that copied the clippercraft, I'd have one in a heartbeat.
