what are they?
Anyone know what those birds are that hang out at the chicken ranch. They look like some type of albatross. Shorter wing span, but still quite wider than a herring gull. Head looks like an alb. also. Is there a lesser albatross or something like that. Even had flight characteristics of one. What was that bad boy?
I have a pic if anyone needs to see it.

Re: what are they?
GBS,
I beleive they are Murres. You might want to check in Petersons Feild Guide for marine Birds.
Tight lines. Tom

Re: what are they?
Yep, it was an albatross. There were also a few species of shearwaters, a jaeger, a phalarope, and bonepart gulls out at the chicken ranch. My buddy troy leads birding trips out of newport and was giving me the run down. I can give you his email if you want to know more.

Black-footed Albatross
PS:
HB,
The Murres are the shorter winged black and white bird with the longish pointed bill that you usualy see on the water.

Re: what are they?
Popeye, don't you just love to see those birds sitting in groups of 10 or 15 on a bait ball? T0o full to fly they are waiting for the gutbag to catch up so they can gorge again. The baitfish down below and further down the TUNA! waiting for round two.
If you see this my friends circle at a distance and watch the lines peel.

Re: what are they?
As my tunaholics friends say when the word is mentioned out of season... BAD BOYS!!!!!!!
Causes too much heartburn....
I saw them too.... You know your pattern is working right when they fly down and try to pick off one of your feathers trolling behind the boat. I can't believe they can keep it up for hours following the boat.
OPPPSSS... BAD BOY!!! BAD BOY!!!!!

Re: what are they?
A lot of people don't know that the albatross that they see come from Midway Island in the Central Pacific. They take off after they fledge and fly all around the Pacific before coming back to Midway, never touching land. Often called gooney birds. When they finally land back on Midway, they often crash land as their wings are so long that they can't land and run fast enough to stop. Albatross were considered bad luck for ancient mariners. Especially if you killed one. But most tuna fishermen like Popeye and Pilar love to see them as they often lead you to baitfish and provide entertainment for me.

Re: what are they?
Black footed albatross. Bingo! So cool to see such neat birds out in the big blue. Looked them up on google, and that it the beauty I saw. There were a few of them out there.
