Default Emergency Afloat or on Terra Firma...

There have been several post on emergencies at sea and the sad note today about the man who passed while fishing. The same holds true for the remote hunting or camping trip.

A very experienced ER Doc who worked at Denver General Hospital in Denver. He use to beat the things he really wanted you to know into your head so you would not forget. One those items he beat into my head was,

"DON"T BECOME ANOTHER EMERGENCY TRYING TO BE A HERO"

It was usually in a raised voice.

Some things to remember while you are out there living life. You have about six minutes before hypoxic injury to the brain begins from lack of blood flow. That is not very long. Keep that in mind when you begin to decide your response to a bad situation. Do not put anyone else or yourself in harms way for nothing. Losing one person is sad, killing a few more responding to an accident is a tragedy.

Resuscitations in hospitals with all the equipment and help are successful about 5% of the time, national average.

This is meant to help you make a decision when and if you are ever faced with the situation. It is also meant to help you handle the decision you make and the outcome. You will be able to influence the outcome very little, so be safe.

Absolutely. This was drilled into us too in my training a long time ago. Always assess the situation before you jump in. Take a few moments to take in the whole scene and identify potential dangers to your safety. It can be hard to do when the adrenalin gets going and the fight or flight response kicks in, but you have to consciously make yourself do it. If you don't, then you stand a very good chance of simply multiplying the number of casualties.
