Default 5/16 Live \'But Report

The Pilar is currently offshore headed for the 'but spot out of Newport where Skein hammered the 78 lb'er last weekend.

Plans are to be off the drink by noon. The current report is "bumpy" at about 2 & 5.

Jen, I'll be watching these reports. At the very least it makes the day go by faster.

I got a ride for Saturday and really want to punch the hali portion of my tag!

WaterDog, I have a ride for Saturday, too.

Anxiously awaiting word from John and the next NOAA forecast update.

Keep your fingers crossed!

At least it is better than the 8am observation which showed the 6.2 swell at 7 seconds.

Sometimes I wish Pilar didn't teach me how to read these things.

This just in... The Pilar is back in the bay with her crew Hummingbird and Puffin's Crew. John reports that most of the dogs are off the water. He thinks he and the Sea Lion were the only 2 boats to get 'buts today. 1 41" 'but and a just over 24" ling for the Pilar. Fishing was hard today. 1 52" for the Sea Lion for his crew from Idaho!

The Puffin was last seen heading west with Phil, James and Keta on board.

Unfortunately, unless a miracle occurs, The Pilar is not fishing tomorrow and not likely Saturday. Hoggemin and PeterMac were scheduled for tomorrow. SouthPaw and I were scheduled for Saturday. :depressed: Keep your fingers crossed for a miracle at 3:30.

Cancel that last request, please. I just heard from Mr. Mac.

This just in from WildHawg - (and a correction to my earlier post) - WH (on the Sea Lion today) was responsible for landing a 53" 70lb flat bugger (self-edit) today!

Waaaawhoooo! Way to go WildHawg!

HOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am truly blessed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ocean was not real friendly today, and only getting more disagreeable...
We (Sea Lion) managed 4 undersize lings, and one pig of a BFB for about 4 1/2 hours of actual angling.
A few ventured out to the ranch, with spotty results. The Black Rocket came in with a limit of chickens--didn't see the rest of the fleet.
I would like to add that without this board--none of this would have been possible. Thank you Jenny, John, And especially Fishplay and Mr. Fisherman who extended a welcoming hand, and put me into a 50 and a 53 inch halibut in 2 days!
YOU ALL ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fished the Ranch today...Sloppy going out (2+ hours), fast drift (backed into it all day), and had a roller coaster ride in (following seas). We landed 3 halibut, two keepers, both chickens. Busted off something big, and had two others pull the hook. Not a great day, but at least we didn't come back wearing the helmut! By the looks of the forecast, we'll definitely be fishing in June!

Update 5/16 - No one's fishing today. Restricted bar. Technically speaking, the CG would let Popeye out, but he's not going either. I guess that's it for May.

So does that mean the Black Rocket is in port too?

Good minus tides this weekend (about -2.0) so I imagine the bar is a bit rough. Wouldnt want to be going across T-bay this weekend.

Too bad we cant go dig razors. :depressed:

tag-a-long,

Check here for the Halibut regs and season for 2003 - 2003 Halibut Regs .

Fishmstr - once they tally up the catch so far, they will pick which days in June will be open. The list of possible dates is in the regs link above. They will pick the first possible day or 2 (or 3), let us fish, tally the catch, then open more days if needed to reach the May Season quota. We will have to wait a couple weeks and see what they decide.

Restricted Bar? I don't think I've ever seen the Newport bar restricted.
Might just be the CG's way of saying "You boys in the small boats go back to bed. We don't want to scoop anybody out of the water today."
I'm sure there wasn't a Salty Dog hat among the boats wanting to get out.

I fished the Pile yesterday with a friend, a bit sloppy but not horrible by any means -- I've been in much worse out of Garibaldi for halibut...1 legal ling and that's about it...we moved all over the place trying different drifts...heard Pilar, saw Corrirod. We did run into a huge flock of birds working bait about 3 miles east of the Pile -- appeared to be chinook/coho on the finder as well.

See you all in June -- Seasquid is out of the shope and ready to roll....

We only boated 2 fish(1 huge yelloweye, 1 nice canary) and 1 octopus. Well, I guess I should clarify, we tried to boat the octopus but he wasn't buying into that program and instead attached himself to the side of my boat. After tugging and pulling on him for about 10 minutes he finally worked his way to the bottom of the boat never to be seen again. Upon reaching the dock it appears as the ride home was even rougher for him(octopus)!

It was a sloppy, windy, rainy, soupy mess out there yesterday. Good to see the dogs out there huddled up and watching out for each other. Congrats to those who tagged a flattie off of the pile.

I had Mike Potts(Hoggemin) and Mike Foster(sorry I can't remember his moniker) and they were great crew and I wish I could've got them a fish but so goes the tale. I wasn't much fun having launched the boat at 1:30am that morning and up at 4 so I must apologize to them for my lack of enthusiasm that day. I was hoping we could get into some fish to wake me up!

Thanks again guys for the great company!

Sorry to Blubeast and Jimmy Carter Black for not being able to make the run today. I made the call yesterday and I'm glad I did. I believe even if we had been able to get out it would've been too sloppy to be much fun. You two are still on the list though if they open another couple days this summer. Thanks for understanding.

Hey Rod I had a great time. With the weather and fishing being just that fishing you can't limit the boat every time, but look out next time we will kick some serious HALI-BUT. You were a great captain and I would go any time again, you rock buddy.

Corrirod,
Good call. Friday the Popeye made it out to the ranch and we did one drift and called it quits. Saturday we went to the ranch in the Sealion and got beat both ways. One halibut, one grey cod and two blackcod.

Puffin had four halibut in the boat when we left.

Mr. Fisherman slid over the bar like a pro and when he docked we were told the bar was closed to 22' and under.
