Default Gunkholing ?

Okay you gunkholers, how much anchor line do you carry? My anchor locker is pretty roomy. I was planning on a danforth style anchor with 8-10' of chain. It will be used primarly in Puget Sound and deeper Western WA lakes. Is it a 3/1 ratio of length/depth? I was thinking 300'. Also, any tips on keeping that much line would be helpful.

Thanks,

Birdnest

Everything you ever wanted to know, and then some:

Safe Anchoring

Also, I would recommend taking additional rope for a stern line. When we gunkholed the San Juans and Desolation Sound there were many bays that were tidally influenced. We would bow anchor in the bay and tie a stern rope anchor to land to keep us stationary in the deep water. Bring a raft to get to and from shore.

Have fun! There are lots of gunkholing books out that can really help you plan your trip.

Birdnest- WIth a rope rode- 5:1 is about minimum, 7:1 better and 10:1 in any sort of Storm/Current/Emergency condition.
Carry as much rope as you can stuff in your locker. It also helps if you have more chain. Recommended is a foot per foot of boat. THis is heavy to pul lby hand so you may want to carry an emergency length and then your short "working" length.
I have 500ft of 7/16 on my 24 with 10 feet of chain and a 22 lb Bruce.
Miss B has all chain rode- 200 feet, I'd like to replace it with 400 feet.
