Would you?
How many of you would take 3 days of vacation (thus severely reducing available tuna days) and drive 6 hours with a forecast like this?
TODAY...W WIND 15 KT...BECOMING NW 20 KT... WIND WAVES 4 FT... S SWELL 5 FT AT 15 SECONDS. SCATTERED SHOWERS.
TONIGHT...NW WIND 20 KT...EASING TO 15 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT... WIND WAVES 4 FT. W SWELL 6 FT AT 11 SECONDS. CHANCE OF SHOWERS.
THU...NW WIND 15 KT...BECOMING W 20 KT IN THE AFTERNOON... WIND WAVES 4 FT. W SWELL 8 FT AT 11 SECONDS. CHANCE OF SHOWERS.
THU NIGHT...W WIND 20 KT...EASING TO 15 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT... WIND WAVES 4 FT. NW SWELL 9 FT. CHANCE OF SHOWERS.
FRI...W WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 10 FT... RAIN IN THE MORNING. CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE AFTERNOON.
SAT...NW WIND 10 KT...RISING TO 20 KT EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON WIND WAVES 4 FT. W SWELL 10 FT.
SUN...NW WIND 15 KT...RISING TO 20 KT EARLY IN THE AFTERNOON WIND WAVES 4 FT. NW SWELL 8 FT.
Just checking...

Re: Would you?
well, after last weeks forecast, I'm just a little bit, what's the word, hesitant, to take a forecast as gospel. But then again, I've never been out for tuna, either.....

I'm coming down.
The forcasts aren't always right. Sometimes you just have to be there and play it by ear.

There you go again with that 'Common Sense' thing, my dear.
Thanks for the link, Popeye.
The 46050 looks much better than that, calm before the blow?
Lets see what the 0930 update brings.

Re: Would you?
I have thursday and friday off, 82 gallons in the tank, and the desire to fill the freezer full of flatty but I think I'm going to call it. Combined 13' seas predicted both days brings that last tooth chipping run to the ranch into the clearer portion of my memory :depressed:

Re: Would you?
As one great wiseman once said, "You gotta lay a hairy eyeball on it".
I can't think of anything that would drive me nuts faster than NOT being there and wondering. If I have to turn around and go home, then so be it.
I can't imagine the thought of just sitting here with my teeth in my mouth doing nothing....I'm not sure what that means, my Father-in-Law says it all the time and I think it sounds cool.

See ya at Newport this evening....come on 2:30!!

My Pa and I are heading over tonight. Ditto on what happened last week...you never know until you go. We were half expecting not to go halibut fishing last thurs and it was the nicest day of the 3! We have an airsream motorhome and a 21' striper (Avocation). See you there.

Re: Would you?
When we left the dock last Thurs. and headed out the weather looked horrible, rain clouds, dark skies, and only a small patch of blue. 20 miles out and an hour later and the weather was buautiful we got sun burned if you weren't using sunblock. Go figure! I think you just have to go there and take a look-see before you write it off.

Re: Would you?
Forecast improved on the 9:30 forecast for tomorrow: 4/6 building to 9.
I think an early run is possible. Might have to do the "drive thru" technique but I think there is a shot at least.
Friday? That's a good question. If the forecast is true then we'll probably be stuck in port. If the waves spread out a little and the wind doesn't blow too hard Thurs. night, then perhaps we have a small window of opportunity in the morning for the Pile and back.
Either day though probably isn't going to be the most comfortable ride. BAM, SWOOSH, BAM......
I guess I'll wait to see the 3:30 forecast.

It looks like a timing thing. They don't know when the thing will come in. So Thursday is a marginal conditions trending to worse conditions day. The key here is that it will lay down before it starts to blow. When it starts to blow 20kts is a lot of wind 90 minutes from the beach. BTW the 90 minutes is on a flat ocean. It is more like 4 to 5 hours when it is not nice. Not ideal in my opinion. Fri and Sat depend on how hard it blows and when.
The forecast last week was totally wrong. It blew on Saturday the day that was forecast to be decent. It did not blow the first 2 days which were predicted to be the worst.
I think it is worth looking at for Thursday. Having said that you better be able to go to plan 'B' if the forecast is wrong on the light side and the conditions are worse than predicted. We have the potential to get in trouble with a worsening trend forecast. Friday and Saturday?????
I'm talking to my mate and get her take .........
Back in a bit.

Re: Would you?
I am committed to being there. I have people counting on me to at least give it a look.
I am not wasting vacation, it is a vacation There are plenty of fish in the bay to chase if conditions aren't pretty outside.
Besides, I remember plenty of times when the forecast was similar and we sat on the beach waiting for the storm that was delayed or didn't come. Wasn't the forecast questionable when Pilar made the exploritory trip and caught the 60# flattie at the pile? It was like a lake! The same thing happened on the day Team Bad Halibut was born. Bad forecast, late start, beautiful fish and pictures of the trip of a lifetime.
I have to go look. I don't have to take excessive chances but I am going.
I hope common sense is resurected in case I need to be talked into staying in the bay.
I'm taking all the crab pots I can carry just in case.
I'm about loaded and plan to hit the road no later than about 1:00. That should put me at the marina by 4:30 or 5:00. See you there or ya' can read about it later

Personally, I liked the way last week looked. It was marginal trending better. The forecast today is ugly and only looking worse. :depressed:
I guess I'll be a landlubber again this weekend (or is that landBlubber *sob*)
(now, with that said, let the ocean prove me wrong! )
Fingers crossed for all you dogs planning and hoping to get out tomorrow.

Re: Would you?
Definitely don't do what the guide did down here last weekend. He was cruising at 20 mph on a rough ocean nearly knocking dentures out left and right and managed to take a wave over the bow. Now he has three less windows to show for it and thinks he needs a bigger boat. Somthing tells me he needs a better skull. The funny thing though to this story is one of the people on board was gearing up with the life jacket and had one foot over the side when one other one asked where in the heck he thought he was going? They were 20 miles out to sea!! The bad thing I heard about the story is they passed 5 boats waving and asking for help before we came upon them waving red shirts and a flare. People were more concerned about getting out to go halibut fishing than help him.
I'm out this weekend with a wedding but I'm not feeling like I'm going to miss the headache the next day from a day on a rough ocean. So I'll give myself a hangover and feel like I would from it anyhow!

Re: Would you?
Jen, get your petoot in gear and you can have a spot on my boat. I've got 2 fellas coming but we can always make room for 1 more fisher. We'll make them ride on the bow and tell them it's kinda like riding on the "black rocket", only wetter!
I'm serious, if you feel a little sick and unable to make it to work tomorrow, we'll make room for ya!
Call me if you want to go. I'm leaving late tonight. 503-626-7264

I got gas, bait and desire. But I'm waiting to see if my partner is going before I set the alarm for 2:00 AM for the Newport drive. The forecast was wrong last Thursday I'm hoping for some fair weather. Perhaps see some of you hardcore at the pile.

Re: Would you?
Man, I just don't see where it's going to be that crappy out tomorrow based on the Pile buoy reports. It hasn't got above 4.6 swell and 2.6 chop all day. Oh well, I guess we'll find out in the morning.
Sorry you can't make it Jen. :depressed: I'm starting to think you just don't want to fish with me! First tuna season, now this....hmmmmm.....I'm starting to see a pattern developing. Can't say as I blame you though!

Oh Rod! I would LOVE to fish with you! Let's make sure it happens this summer. We might have to drag John along, though. He gets funny about his mate whispering fish to another boat
