And I\'ll say it again ......
This is an open invitation to anyone who is willing to learn how to boat and fish on the ocean.
Join us, the Salty Dogs and get your guppy season under your belt.

We are looking for a few good men and women.

The learning curve is steep but worth it. Soon you will be charging out into the ocean and catching fish, feeling confident and safe and your buddies will be there to support you.
"And I'll say it again .. I need a brand new friend, the end ........" Jim Morrison, The Doors.

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
If there is one thing I've found about the salty Dogs--it's that they (now we) are a friendly bunch. I just joined the club last Thursday, and I gotta say I've never felt more welcomed by a bunch of "strangers" in my life.
Anyone who has a predisposed opinion of some group who would have a "secret" board all their own to discuss fishing ought to lighten up and take Pilar or one of the others up on a ride sometime.
I'd love to take ya, but I currently own only a driftboat and raft.
Speakin' of which--I thought I had a ride with Mr. Fisherman for Thursday or Friday, but I have not heard form him since he offered on May 7.
So...weather permitting, anybody out there with a sea worthy vessel need a sea worthy mate? I'm quite experienced (50 Gross Ton Masters License) durable, and I work well under pressure. I come with my own gear, and will share expenses as well as my stash of 24-48 ounce leads. I filet, clean up, and will even do the windows (right Fishplay?). Sorry to wait to the last minute, but I thought I was set.
Thanks, Charlie.

Or we could come down south for some "southern hospitality"! I personally want to come down for a while and venture forth from Charleston or Port Orford...maybe both! Look forward to a southern escort! Reciprosity is a wonderful thing!

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Perhaps the neatest thing about the Southcoast is, proximity. Once the salmon fishing kicks in, you're talking about great fishing from the mouth of the jetty at Charleston to only a few miles out. It's not uncommon to go out after work! Head south a few miles and you're into miles of bottom fish.
Then there's Port Orford. When you round Tichenor Point heading north and see those rocks jutting out of the water only 6 miles away, one can only smile in anticipation of what's to follow.
My family and I had to leave this area in 1988 for work. (Roseburg to Poulsbo, WA..Poulsbo, WA to Lebanon, Lebanon back to Coquille)Since then, I've been positioning myself for the opportunity to again return to my roots. Tidewater and saltwater. Difference is, I'm not sitting on the bank or the jetty anymore! I am out there!
Pinch me, I must be dreaming...

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
WH proved to be a good shipmate and yes, he even does windows.
He cleaned with windex, then treated the outside with rain-x and the inside with anti-fog. He then offered to run my side curtain to Boat Tops & More in Salem to repair some snaps they damaged when they fixed a bent bow a couple weeks before.
If your a little shy meeting new people and are looking to find a fishing partner, he comes highly recomended.
One thing is for damn sure, you will not experience any awkward luls in the conversation.
I'm still not sure if my ears were ringing from the whine of the motor at 4k RPM's or if it was Charlie.
At one point I found myself wishing he would get
Charlie really is as nice a guy as you'll ever find. Extremely willing to help with anything and more appreciative than anyone I've ever fished with.
You will be in good company Thursday Ray.
Good luck to you guy's.
Edit:
I would also like to extend an invitation to anyone interested in becoming a Salty Dog. When the new boat is ready it should be a very comfortable platform to fish from.
Halibut however, is not a good trip for getting aquainted with Big Blue. Get your sea legs under yourself on some inshore bottom fishing trips this summer and move up from there.

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Uboatcdr, sounds good. We are going to try to do some navigation exercises and will surely have more TUNA! meetings. Join us at one of these events and meet the gang.
After the spring wind show offshore there is Salmon in the ocean and TUNA! after July. Many of the dogs are avid bottom fishers and these are good short trips to shake a boat down on.
Welcome aboard and start asking questions. You can also search the forum for topics you want info on. Many things get discussed at length here and there is alot of written info and links.
PS: If you missed it most of the gang will be coastal this weekend pursuing the wily Halibut. We'll be back next week.

Not to worry Mello, we'll head up there soon and join in on the clan. I tried to make the last TA meeting but the friggn slide by the sea lion caves kept me from swigging a few hopps and barleys back with the guys. Oh well, isn't it coming time for another one of those???? I can almost feel that warm weather approaching!!

Pilar, I openly accept your invitation. I don't know but maybe you folks would'nt mind a new face at the next "I wanna become a tunaholic too" meetings? I'd love to meet a some of you folks in person, instead of wishing I was out there too. You guys and gals...are a great group that I'd like to be a part of. Maybe someday I'll get to change my moniker to Oceanbound!!

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Bankbound - you could change your moniker to Oceanbound and it would have a whole different meaning. Today, you are bound *to* the bank... but tomorrow you are bound *for* the ocean. See?
Anyway, the TA meetings are always open to anyone who wants to join and learn or contribute or both. We generally find a location that can deal with 50, 60 or 75 rowdy, ocean-loving salty creatures such as ourselves. Some bring spouses or significant others. There's even a place for kids most times. It's always fun. Please, do attend the next one... and bring a friend!
I guess we'd better start talking about the next one. We going to try for Newport again? Or... ??

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Pilar,
A good friend (look4elk)and I got hooked on ocean fishing out of my boat last summer for salmon. We stayed within eyesight of land as I have a 21' Duckworth sled and wasn't comfortable going out much farther given my experience. Even then, it was only on days where we had excellent ocean conditions.
We would love to learn more and have a healthy admiration and respect for the Salty Dogs. Any chance for us to learn from you folks would be a great opportunity on our part. We really want to get out tuna fishing, as we have had a blast on chartered trips out of Depoe Bay. If the invitation is open, we would love to get connected.
Regards,
Reel Livin'

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Pilar, that big blue fishing sounds like a bunch O' fun, but, the real possibility of death scares me. It's not that death itself scares me, it all comes to visit us sooner or later, it's just that vision of the "last moment" causes me to shudder.....
..............
..........
....
..I hate the thought of being beaten to death by the wife when I bring home all the required new fishing gear. We'll lurk and learn on the cyber pond for a year or so and gradually sneak some new gear into the fishing aresenal...till then we'll be bobbing around at the spark plug salmon fishing..thanks for the invite, besides that Sealion crew looks like a rough bunch

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
I would love to go out sometime. I am not new to boating but have not been out on the Big Blue much and never far from shore. I recently purchased a used boat and am refurbishing/outfitting to be able to venture futher off shore. Until it is ready I would really like to get some experience and appreciate your offer(s) to take some of us less experienced fisher wannabees out there. Let me know if you ever have an open seat as I can go just about any day with very little notice. I have rod/reel and some gear and am willing to help anyway I can. Thanks Alot.

A few lurkers come in from the weeds .....
We are having a Tunaholics meeting soon see the other thread. Come and find a boat to ride on for a saltwater trip and meet a bunch of nice folks.
Mello Yello, that close in Salmon sounds fun. Even better you are far enough away from little Beirut to not be real crowded.
Uboatcdr, Bankbound, Reel Livin, Look4elk, Fisher Price, Crabbait, Rather B Fishn, Big TULE, I'm talking to you, er um Crabbait yer already there dude. Anyway you volunteers need to show up and get to know the rest of the bunch.
The summer of saltwater is underway.
Rod Holder, what are you sayin? You are or are not going to fish in the brine? If yer skeert say yer skeeert. If not then grab a rod and go forth and catch some fish!

Rod Holder - You think the spark plug isn't in the big blue?
Dang - you be 10 miles off the beach on the Roughest bar in the world at the plug! The ocean just lays down and gets nicer from there on out (well usually). 10 miles-40 miles not much different, ain't gunna swim that far anyway. There is a little more...okay.. a LOT more company around the bouy I guess!

I would also like to hookup with some others who are willing to share their knowledge on the open blue water. I have a 20 ft Lund Tyee Grand Magnum, but would alsao like to hitch a ride the first couple of times to learn the subtle trick you guys have. Maybe I meet some of you at the Swap Meet on 5/31. Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Hey all you Salty Dogs,
I'm looking forward to meeting all of you at the next round up. I'll be bringing the missus because she has a serious case of Salmonous Catchus. We went out on a charter last year for Silvers and she had a grand time. It was her first time out on the big blue in a small boat aside form the Gulf of Mexico. She was apprehensive until she felt the shake of a fish and reeled in a nice salmon. Hasn't stopped talking about it since. We don't have a boat but may at some time in the future if her case of Catchus doesn't clear up. I hear the symtoms linger the more salt water your exposed to. I want to learn the sea the right way the first time and look forward to this years salt season. See you all. Luke

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
I'm skeeert allright, gots gear fear I do. Got a garage full of fishing gear, crab pots, boat stuff but no real heavy duty offshore fishing gear. If I start tooling up the family for Hallbut & Tuna, I'm skeert the wife will kill me. About the time I show up at home with a half a sixpack of rods and reels capable of dangling 2lbs of weight 450' over the side of the boat, the spousal unit is going to take a tire iron to me. Give me a year or so to sneak some of the required fishing gear into the inventory and I'll gladly throw in with yas.
got to go now and stand on the corner with my cardboard sign that says "will work for fishing gear"

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Thankyou for the invitation. I must say....I've never seen a group so willing to share trade secrets. I've been lurking the boards for a few weeks and gathered a whole bunch of useful information. I have had the pleasure of going out with Popeye, his family, and crew. What a nice experience.....don't think there is a nicer group on the water. Therefore....I owe (blame  ) my interest in fishing out of Newport to Popeye. I hope to contibute in some way as I learn the ropes.

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Have to agree that the salty dogs site is one of the best around, Had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Mr. Fisherman via the c-dory owners group site http://groups.msn.com/CBratsOnline/_...pgmarket=en-us (another fine site). Mr. Fisherman/Ray is one outstanding person and a heck of a fisherman(plus he has a cool boat) and he appears to be very reprehensive of the type of folks who frequent this site from what I have been reading over the last couple of months and the I-Fish VHF chatter over the halibut season.
Little background on myself
Boat - 1995 25' C-Dory cruise ship "shearwater" moored at Newport for the summer
Salt water - grew up salmon fishing out of Florence, Winchester Bay and Newport
Fishing - all my life
Biggest single catch - #40 ling cod and #35 ling cod double at the rockpile (70's era bottom fishing)
Biggest crab - 12" dungenous(sp) from Winchester bay (late sixty's)
There are far better fishermen on this site than me so not sure what I can offer in that line but I do love boats, fishing and the ocean and have to admit to a tuna itch after all that I have been reading and stories from my grandfather's trips out of Illwaco.
So out of the closet and my first post story below
Hard to narrow it down after 40 plus years of fishing but lets talk about that weekend of the huge crab.
Spent many weekends at Winchester growing up fishing and crabbing with the parents. There used to be a long pier not far from the south jetty (may still exist) that my brother and I would crab off of if the boat was full. That weekend we did not get to salmon fish and spent the days crabbing only to pull in this 12" monster, cool thing was my mom caught a #23 silver the same day and we both got our picture in the Reedsport paper with the catch (I'm sure she still has the article).
The heart of my fishing is being able to reflect back on all the fun over the years with friends and family that the sport has given me. Fish or no fish I'm a happy man when on the water.
Looking forward to meeting folks and fishing with you at Newport this year.

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Well Luke.......thought I might have to swallow a goldfish or yellow eye. I'll take a shot at it.
When I was younger and naive I would fish with the neighbor who was considerably older. He always kept a tube of Preparation H in his tackle box. I just assumed it was bait. One day I went to Walmart......looked all through the bait section.....couldn't find Preparation H. As I was leaving...I went through the pharmacy.......low and behold......there was the Preparation H . I just laughed thinking they had put it in the wrong place. I recalled the neighbor saying he used this on the slow days. Well.....as things go.....I went fishing a couple days later and they were slow. To the point ya get squirming around......ya start to get aches and pains and things get to itching. Ya get so distracted that if ya did get a bite ya would miss the fish.... anyway.... I pulled out the "bait" .....read the instructions and thought..............this isn't bait at all. Under the circumstances...I followed the instructions.....and guess what....I caught a fish. Guess that stuff does work. I do have one question though......should a guy share a tube or should everyone have his own...

Re: And I\'ll say it again ......
Pilar,
I want to become part of the Salty Dogs. I have a 22' Duckworth outfitted with 2 brand new honda 4-Strokes. (225 HP & 9.9 HP)
I would consider myself OK company if you like telling Uncle-daddy and Aunt-momma jokes being I am from Kentucky. Don't worry, I take it well considering everyone else who knows me has a good time with that.
I have been in Oregon for almost 11 years so my feet are getting webbed. I have fished the salt allot the last 4 years in my boat. Love the siver & nook fishing out there. I have electric downriggers on the boat and when I had the fly rod out there last year landing those silvers on it, I think I found the cat's meow on that deal.
Like I said, I love to go out there as long as I am safe. I am properly outfitted, with VHF, Chart plotter/GPS combo and a 2nd GPS for backup.
Look foward to all the future posts and will welcome people who like to fish and have a good safe offshore experience in my boat anytime. Would also love swapping trips with those of you out there who are interested.
Regards,
Terry Luckett (Aka: The Kentucky Hog Hunter)
