Re: Suggestions for tent stove?
Lucky Guy,
I don't have a lot of experience with tent stoves but I got a Four Dog for a Cabelas Outback Lodge (12x12 nylon) after doing a bunch of online research. It costs about the same as a cylinder stove, but uses a baffle design that many others don't use. Its not a complex design and is actually pretty simple. There's a horizontal plate that blocks the stove pipe. This does two things, one it prevents sparks and embers from shooting straight up the pipe. They have to go up, then around the plate, then up the pipe. Sparks and embers can't make that path, but burning paper can if you use paper to start the fire. I spent some time watching it to make sure. Two, it creates a nice hot spot for high heat cooking, like boiling water quick.
The stove is well made and airtight. If you close the air intake the fire will go out. I had the box glowing orange/red by accident and its held up fine.
To be honest, if you can weld and produce a good bead you can make your own. PM me and I'll give you dimensions of mine. My welding skills are very limited and I didn't have the time to fiddle with making a stove so I bought one.
Now the only thing I didn't care for was the spark arrestor. Its just mesh with tack welds. I could have made one myself. It doesn't have a cap, but it does work well. You want as much unrestricted flow as possible or else it will clog with creosote. The stovepipe would probably have been cheaper to buy locally as well, but overall I am happy with the stove and transaction.
Before you buy any stove, I would call Four Dog and speak to the owner. He's quite the character but a huge source of information. He knows his stuff and several tent makers recommend his stoves (other stoves are recommended by other tent makes too).
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
Jason
