Newport Coordinates

Now that I have a new GPS I feel more secure going out in the salt. Can anyone provide me with coordinates forthe ranch, rock pile and compass rose? Thanks for any help you can give.

please use the search function for the coordinates it is located search here. this was posted in the last week or 2 for the chicken ranch which is 32 miles offshore or the rockpile which is 16-19 miles offshore. if you have a chart I would guess that you can find these coordinates on the chart. I have not heard of the Rose as a waypoint. The only thing I can figure is if you look at the right chart there is a compass rose on the water and in that general area is where someone was fishing.

you will tend to get more responses when most of us aren't out on the water as was the case this weekend. have you fished in this area? tell us a salty story.....

Thanks for the heads up. I've fished the salt in this area for a while now, but always found myself second guessing my exact location. I can usually be found on the ifish community page. My story has to do with fishing Campbell River where I try to go every year if possible. We were fishing for Chinooks and a lot of rock fish and the crusty old guy at the ramp kept wondering ho we could catch fish after the prime tide swings and during slack times. Each day he would ask what we were after. The first day we told him Chinooks. He said "you're too late in the day, the bite's over." We came back and showed him six fish up to 47#. The next day he asked what our target was and we told him Ling Cod. He told us,"All the big ones have moved up to Johnstone Straits." We came back with three over 25#. Next day things didn't change with the old guy. we told him we were going after Halibut. He responded'"There hasn't been a halibut caught here is over ten years!" Needless to say we came back with three buts up to 56#. The next year we came back, he was out of business - wonder why. Anyone up for a trip to Campbell River this summer?

Impressive results! I could go for such a trip! I usually go to Uclulet each summer but a shift to Cambell River could be reasonable!

We used to fish the west side of Vancouver Island, but the weather was better and the fishing was just as good.

Did Campbell River and Desolation Sound 2 summers ago and that is pure heaven up there. Big fish and beautiful scenery and lots of places to go to get away from the crowd.

I can second the better weather/water conditions and just as good of fishing on the east side.

Uclelet has some killer rock fishing real close by though. I've cleaned up on lings using Pt. Defience jigs there.

Skspawner, I am not familiar with the spot you are calling 'Compass Rose'. I will give you a waypoint for each of the other spots. Please be careful as these places are far offshore and the weather is not looking too nice for the upcoming weekend. You can get caught in a situation where you have to come home against the wind and get the crap beat out of you.
