Default HaliBut's Took A Pound\'en

The HaliBut's weren't the only thing that took a pounding out of Newport last week. So did I and all those on board the Fishplay.

Thanks to all who fished with me. Your generosity and good company was appreciated. You are all welcome again.

We did manage to catch fish all three days; there just wasn't any size to them. We had three limits of flatty, three nice lings, a huge black cod,a couple quilback, and one broken ankle for our Thursday efforts. Yes, it was x-rayed and found to be a jagged break that is going to require a specialist.

Friday was limits of flatty, one ling (that turned out to be 1/4" short), and one quilback. The undersize ling cost $80.00.

As for Saturday....lets just say the ocean wasn't the only thing rough around the edges.

Note to self: Limit consumption of adult beverages.

There was nothing pretty about Saturday. Big ocean and lousy drift. Backing into the dirft did provide a nice salt water facial and that leathered look all Salty Dogs desire.

I found out there is only so much you can do to make a 19ft sled comfortable; and it just aint enough!

I spent today looking at a 28 footer with twin 302's with industrial Mercruisers. It's been in climate controlled dry storage for 5yrs. But will clean up nicely. This weekend will be spent draining the 120 gallons of old fuel, kitting carbs, and replacing batteries. If everything checks out Del and myself will be partners on a 28ft Hardtop Thunderbird.

Thank you to Pilar, Pilar's Mate, Keta, Skein, and Dale for the help and hospitality.

Here is Wayne "Hooked Up".

This is a shot of WildHawg and Wayne with there fish.

This is mine from the same trip and my biggest of the weekend.

You got it Keta.

Just say no to too much Vodka!

Wish you had been around to look at the Monster today. It is quite possilbly the ugliest beast ever built, but it's meticulious maintanence shows.

Anyone know anything about the Industrial Mercruisers??? I don't think you could ever break one. Darn things are huge just like the rest of the boat.

I'll take some pic's next weekend.

Remember when we were fishing for ling's, and I caught the one that was only an inch over? I told you to "measure it again"--you said "what--don't you trust my measuring?" Well Greg, frankly, ah...no!
Seriously though, had a great time with you and Wayne, and am looking forward to our next adventure together. Hopefully it won't include injuries to anything but fish next time!
Wayne is one tough SOB. He insisted we keep going out to the ranch after his injury, fished and walked on it, then went back on Friday for another limit  . I was a paramedic, and he had me pretty well convinced it was just a sprain. Hats off to ya buddy, you're a tougher man than I!
Thanks again Greg and Wayne--and by the way, that fish I got had to be real close to 50", giver or take an inch--it weren't no wee baby!!!!
Sure put a smile on my face

Charlie, in the future you are the official length statitician!

I shared that info in hopes the next guy will be famillair with the regs and extra careful when measuring. If the game cop had thought it was intentional he could have considered it a crime and wrote more charges.

The minimum length on lings is 24". I think they raised it from 22" when they increased the bag limit to 2 fish. Can anyone refresh me on that?

The fishchecker went way out of HIS way to see to it that we were cited. Be Careful!

WildHawg is right about his fish. If you know how big he is you know that fish is a good one.
The only decent fish on the boat last week.

I guess the past years have spoiled me. I'm used to the boat average being much higher.

It was nice to see you too Rod. I was cussing you as you came towards us.

"Jesus....you'd think this $&%*^% guy would give me a little more room. OHHH hey thats Corrirod!"

You must have recognized me and came our way to chat.

My crew laughed like heck at me all the way to the dock!!

Be glad you weren't in CA with that short ling. I speared one 1/8" short and it cost me $270 and a misdemeanor on my record, and the limit was 26" then.
