Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
If you use these and live at 4100' make sure you wrap them tight when heading to sea level. The atmospheric pressure at sea level compresses the foam and everything comes loose.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I use pipe insulation, and the type of rigs that I tie already have a swivel at the end, so I stuff the swivel in the 'slit' on the pipe insulation and then wrap them around and stick the hook in when it's tight. It also helps if you put a some small PVC pipe or wood dowel inside the insulation to keep the foam from getting smashed

PVC pipe works.
Red, No Duct Tape?
I wrapped some of mine with black tape compressing the foam. These aren't effected by atmospheric pressure.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I also use the pipe insulation for 1/2" pipe ( they also make it for 3/4" pipe). I believe it cost about a buck fifty for a 4' section. The half inch stuff will fit in the larger plano tackle containers, even when wrapped with corkies and yarn. This is great when toting gear to the river in a backpack. The box also helps to keep the leaders from getting unraveled.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I just stick the tag end into the slit in the pipe insulation then wrap the leader around and stick the hook in the insulation. I carry three or four of these in my vest. It sure keeps you in the water and fishing more than tying rigs out there.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I guess I go the extra mile when making my leader holders. I use the pipe insulation for my vest leaders, and those water-toy things (mentioned above) for the boat leaders. I just use a utility knife, putting the blade out to the first notch, insert in to the roller, and roll it in a circle. Makes a nice straight circular cut that you can easily stuff line in to.
Hard to explain, but easy enough to understand with a photo. I'll post one later tonight. If interested, check back for the photo.
I use that for all my leaders, including worms. Been doing this for years.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I use the water toys and just cut a slit perpendicular to the cylinder through to the center, then stick the hook in the foam, wrap the leader and stuff the remainder into the slit. I like Parkers idea though and I am going to see if that holds the leader tight enough to keep it from unraveling in my vest.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I have a completely different method that works great for tackle boxes, especially with tall openings. I use the plastic cardboard that is used for real estate and political signs. I cut it to the size that fits my tackle box and cut 1/4" slits on each side, about 1" apart. The slits don't fray the leaders after many uses. These can also lay flat.
Another good side of these is that at the end of the day, you can take a scrub brush and clean the leaders, stand them vertically to dry, and then put them back in your tackle box. They are free, too! I won't mention that you can pick them up almost anywhere, especially during campaign season.
Here's a pic of my mooching leaders and sturgeon leaders. They work great for my kokanee wedding rings, too.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
a cheap foam covered roler pad for a paint roller works better then the pipe insulation it doesnt compress as much and holds the hooks better.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
Lefty, I also have been using those cut up "fun noodles". Learned that little trick fishing with the Pro's on the PWT Tournament on Fort Peck back in 2000. At first I couldn't find the fun noodles and so I used the pipe wrap but I didn't like those as much because, as mentioned by others, they can be compressed and collapsed. The noodles, on the other hand are thicker bodied and won't collapse - unless someone with a big-butt sits on it.....then, big dumb fish on!

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
2" by 3" ziplocks work for me.....
I can then put about 10 or 15 of those into a 4 by 6 ziplock. Obviously it lays pretty flat in my vest pocket, and I dont have to worry about line chafe, even works with rags, corkies in place ( I run some yarn into the corkie to keep it from moving == per Mr. kent Anderson)

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
Take a 6" piece of 1 1/2 " pipe insulation.
squeeze it flat with the split side up
Put a 3 1/2" x 1/2" rubber band (size 84) around it from end to end
Stick the hook in the top split area - wrap -
Tuck the end under the rubber band on one side or the other
Also takes up less space squashed flat with the rubber band

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I concur with Lefty, Rola76, Reeldick, Parker and Snapset. The larger diameter water toy is the best because leaders don’t have tight curls when you take them off.
The only thing I would add is to pull an indelible felt tip down the slit. I’ve had trouble finding it when it tightens up.

pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I remember seeing a picture of someone using pipe isulation to secure their pre-tied leaders. I understand that you stick your hook in it, then wrap your leader around it, but how do you attatch the loose end of the leader? Tape? I currently use pips, but want to tie up some leaders with corkies and yarn attached and they take up too much room in my pips.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
I start with the loose end and wrap the line over itself and stick the hook in at the end. This seems to work for me.

Try using a fun noodle, those 4 foot styrofoam rods that you can buy for your kids to beat on each other with, I think you can get them for about 4 bucks. Cut them into 18 inch pieces, I used a serrated kitchen knife and start them with the leader end first them wrap them around and tack the hook into the styrofoam. This will keep the loose leader end tied down and you should be good to go.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
Two choices:
Pre-tie a loop in the end and use small pins with "bb" type heads on them to secure the leader down
OR
Cut a slit down the center of the foam...tuck about 1-2 inches of the leader inside the center. Once you get the first one wrapped, the slit down the center should be tight enough to prevent the leaders from coming out.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
Just wrap them arond the insulation with slight tension but not so much that you crush the foam.
Some guys put a wood dowel thru the middle and mount the whole thing on their boat. Then the leaders can just roll off.
I usually cut the foam to 6" lengths and wrap 6 or so leaders on. Two or three of these stuffed in your vest is all you need for the day. Light weight, easily accessible, and quite cheap.

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
another option is to put a dowel inside the pipe insulation. then you can screw inan eye bolt to use to hang it and it minimizes the compression

Re: pipe isulation for holding leaders ??
Heh high-arc.Someone already mentioned putting the insulation on pvc pipe and that is the best way of stopping the foam from crushing. You just start wrapping the loose end first over its self and end up with the hook that is than stuck into the foam to secure it .Makes a great leader holder and inexpensive.A 6 or 8 inch holder is good sizes that will fit in your vest or tackle box easy.
