Default sablefish?

Anyone ever eat these? Heard they are oily.I thought I'd give them a try if they are worth it.

I'd like to know about black cod and skate also. I caught a 40+" cod and about a 42+" skate. Used the cod for crabbait and let the skate go.

Should I have ate them?

Greenbuttskunk, I'd upgrade if I were you. You can trade the belly strip from that fish for a black and white one suitable for the fish and chips. Or do cedar plank Sablefish.

Cook the fish on a roofing shake at 300 degrees for 12 hours. Note: you may need a fire extinguisher as this fish is very greasy.

When done allow to cool, scrape fish into trashcan and eat the board.

A Sable fish and a Black Cod are the same fish. The name Sable fish is a retail marketing thing. It just sounds better by that name. They are the same oily soft fish...

Are you sure they are the same? If they are then I'm not sure what I was catching but they were definately a different species. One was black and the other was brownish tan. On the Garibaldi run I caught the black ones and the Newport run was all brown.

Whatever the black one was it worked pretty well as crabbait.

The difference is that monkfish is actually edible. It's ugly as hell, but tastes good. A blackcod looks tasty and tastes like crud.

I tried to grill one, and my grill caught fire. I hear they are good smoked, but if I brine it just right, so is my shoe.

FIRE... Hmmmm, maybe they we could catch them and cook off the oils and sell it as low grade fuel oil in BOE'S truck. Just imagine... what we could do with all the lovely Sable fish.

Black cod good but oily
Skate bad

Smoke the black cod until it is 3/4 done. Take it out of the smoker and put in fridg overnight.
Wipe off the oil and finish smoking.

I sent our Sablefish home with one of my crew and she liked it better than the Halibut???

I had to ask her twice to make sure she hadn't gotten the two fish confused?

Black cod fillets look good enough to try just once each year, and each year it just keeps getting worse and worse Did that make sense

I wish I could remember who told me it was good to eat so I could've stuffed the whole thing....
oh never mind, just don't try it!!!

A few years ago I heard that Skate wings actually were punched out in the shape of scallops and were sold as scallops with not too many people noticing. In some cases the small ones were mixed with the real thing and sold at retail. The one way to tell the difference is the sweet smell is missing from the Skate wing.

Just FYI

As I said, I had heard that Skate tasted good like scallops.
I've had scallops, they are great, even eaten them fresh before they were taken out of the water. Skate tastes nothing at all like scallops.

When I was a kid we used to pay $16 a pound for Smoked Sable. It was and still is delicious. I have also had it prepared a few other ways that are good. I am willing to share recipes if anyone is interested. The fish is very fatty. Think of how you might prepare tuna or mackerel.

Were these fish caught as incidentals while Halibut fishing? I haven't personally caught one of these since the 70s when they were all over the SOund.

pkg, they were everywhere! In fact we had a triple on at one time. I might try some just to say I did the next time out. I'll email you for some of those recipes.

I got myself a real nice one about 46 inches. I'll smoke it up with my next batch of sturgeon or salmon.

sablefish and blackcod are the same, and not to be confused with pacific cod. Blackcod is nasty, and great crab bait. Pacific Cod is tasty. Barbels on a pacific cod.

I must be strange - I kinda like the stuff!
If you grill the meat, or use a 'George Foreman' type grill the oil drains, and add a touch of lemon, yum yum! I hear there's a restraunt in Seattle that serves only "sable fish", and that they're pretty popular.

Tonight we are serving our house special...'George Foreman Sable fish' We will be providing lobster bibs to keep your' clothes free of all the dripping Sable juice.

I can just hear it now. Market wholesale is 1.19 per pound a smart guys sells it for $19.99 a plate with some fancy garnish.

It is like Monk fish. Years ago fisherman would throw them away and only the poor Monks would pick them up and take them home . Now they cost more than lobster and actually taste like Lobster. The ugly fish in the Sea are the best fair.
