Linejerk,

Are you trying to find a launch for the Johnson unit?? If so, the only available launch would be during high waters on the other side of the dike where the parking lot is located and during low water you would need to drag, push, pull, etc your boat to the water. I hope this helps.

Pope and Rentenaar units are land locked so you would need to drag, push, pull it into the water. Good luck this season

LJ, The Gilbert Rvr Launch is the only launch for the eastside......or the McNary Lk launch.
Both are 100yds apart from each other.

Note: you can NOT take a boat inside the refuge markers. IOW's...you can't cut across the lake to get to the other side. Only the Eastside Roaming units are accessable by boat. The westside is a differant story...Mud Lk and Steelman both have launches.

Linejerk, I think you can put in at the westside check station, there are two blinds, Steelman 2 and 3, which are on sturgeon lake, and only accessible by boat. Otherwise as others have said, the lake is refuge and closed to hunting.

I've been wrong before, but last time I sat on Steelman 2, I'm pretty sure it was on Steelman Lake. I don't think any Steelman blinds are on Sturgeon Lake.

For that matter, as HuntnFish pointed out--most of Sturgeon Lake is preserve and, in general, closed to boats.

I too have been wrong before.
But I do know a fixed distance from the Steelman blinds, there are buoys and signs which designate the water beyond as refuge.
Looking at a map, there is no land which seperates the bodies of water.
I'm could be wrong on the water bodies name.

Alright, where's my Westside map....

Huh. We're both wrong. The spit/point that 4-9 are on separates Sturgeon from Steelman lakes, even though there's no land separating the lakes where the spit ends. That puts 7-9 on Sturgeon Lake, but west of Oak Island. 2 and 3, though, are on Steelman.

Figures.

Ha ha, WHAT are you guys talking about?!!

You're on the opposite side of the Lake!

(Hint: You're NOT taking any big, "trailer/launchable" boat to Johnson Unit)

Oops, well I stand corrected!

(I reread this post and saw you weren't referring to hunting Johnson-my bad )

So, your other "boat opportunities" (beside Johnson) are like this...

You can access Steelman "boat only" blinds from the launch next to the Westside Checkstation.

You can launch and hunt Mud Lake from the "primitive" launch onto Round Lake, next to Parking Lot #2

Note: Sometimes you can hunt Big Martin's Lake, ML#14 & #15, when the water's way up, it looks like this

http://sports.webshots.com/photo/218...29466406Izpcal

at the same time you can often hunt Holman Point, but your boat will have to be small/portageable, as you might have to drag/pull it over some areas that will be out of the water while getting there.

You can hunt both Crane Lake and North Crane by launching on the Gilbert River Launch Ramp or coming from the Landing (used to be "Brown's Landing") in Scappoose.

That looks like this

http://sports.webshots.com/photo/206...29466406xwrAlS

Ditto to hunt Malarky Lake by going up the Gilbert River, that looks like this

http://sports.webshots.com/photo/108...29466406wJVbyx

http://sports.webshots.com/photo/108...29466406INPJKG

You can also access Aaron Lake by going part way up the Gilbert River and going up/over the bank near the pump station

OR you can launch into the Little McNary estuary, near the Gilbert River Boat Ramp, and motor up and through the canals TO Aaron Lake.

Obviously, you can hunt both McNary Lakes by launching here too.

That's about it...but "looking around" at some of these places is going to be by foot.

Right now, the water's waay down and much of this won't be accessible (or even look the same)

"Best" time is really early->mid June when the water's at it highest (besides Winter flood times).

But, obviously, it's too late for that now...so much of it will be walking/viewing.

Good luck...

No!

It's the Ultra Secret Spot, the one with the GoogleEarth links, the GPS Coordinates listed and the String that you can follow in the dark from the Parking Lot...

All that's "known" (and given)

Trouble is...you have to know WHEN to be there!

(And that's the secret! )

No Jay...I've not taken you there yet.
And if I find a foreign gps in the sled... I'm keeping it and downloading all YOUR waypoints and tracks.

Besides, where were YOU when we needed an extra hand on the come-along? Jimbo's earned HIS keep.

I assume this is the hunt I missed????

From what I heard, Jokester, and I think Cityfisher also got lost hearding out to the Racetrack one morning.

Jeremy, if its still around, might be a good ideal to resurrect your Google maps thread, so grown folks can learn to walk in the dark, and not get lost.

It wasn't a matter of knowing WHERE we were going, (I've been out there/walked that route plenty of times before) it was not being able to see ANY landmarks even 20 yards away in the fog!

Nothing but wet grass and total opaqueness to guide by.

Kinda like flying VFR in IFR conditions...I've gotta admit that's certainly one place a GPS really comes in handy.
