Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

UPCOMING MEETINGS ON GROUNDFISH REGULATIONS

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Marine Resources Program will have two separate meetings to share information and obtain public feedback in preparation for the June 2003 Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) meetings that will impact Oregon’s groundfish regulations.

1. PRE-ALLOCATION COMMITTEE MEETING:

The goal of this meeting is to provide information to the public on the recent stock assessments and STAR panels (widow rockfish, black rockfish, bocaccio and Pacific Ocean perch), as well as to update the public on the recent in-season actions and the recent (May 5-9) Groundfish Management Team (GMT) meeting results on preliminary harvest levels for 2004. This meeting is also intended to get public input prior to the PFMC groundfish Allocation Committee meeting (June 10-11 in Portland).

Date: Thursday May 22, 2003
Time: 6-9 p.m.
Location: Englund Marine, Newport Bayfront

2. PRE-PFMC MEETING:

This meeting will provide follow up to the public on the results of the PFMC Allocation Committee deliberations and will address the upcoming issues anticipated to be addressed at the June 16-20 PFMC meeting. ODFW staff and Oregon PFMC members will be presenting information and be available to respond to questions and receive recommendations from the public.

Date: Thursday June 12, 2003
Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Englund Marine, Newport Bayfront

re-cast--this is an important issue, as commercial boats make far and away the largest impact on our stocks of groundfish. Included among them are the genus "Sebastes", which make up the majority of our catch when bottomfishing. Attend if you can (I'll try!)

I can not make the 5-22 meeting. The 6-12 is a possibility. I will try to make it. We need to have representation at both. The data they will be presenting on recent stock assessments will be interesting but we already know the Blacks are abundant. What we really need is the data on the orange fish.

This is a good opportunity for some of the Pups and Old Dogs alike to become involved and get their paws wet.

Educate and Activate.

That's what will preserve our fish and our recreation.
