Scott, not getting mad, just had a different opinion on STS.

However, after help from our friendly moderators, I have reexamined the rules, and realize that I cannot state the basis for my opinion.

Trust me Scott, after the day I had with you last fall, I don't think I'll be questioning any of your articles.

Yes, a good issue.

And I note this one contains pictures that demonstrate responsible handling of fish that are to be released.

Good job!

Glad you like the monthly editions Dan. Scott, I've got a lot of other great pictures of you that will run in future issues.

I'd really like to hear what ifishers would like to read and see in future issues of Salmon Trout Steelheader magazine.

What was blackdog upset about?

Nick, I would like to see an article about Ifish's Riverliver and his Multnomah channel reports on water conditions. Something with a few photo's of his set up and him checking the visability. Maybe a little back ground on him.

Maybe we could toss in a few bucks for a sechi gauge for this guy.

Did you say hi to Aunt Lorene. for me?

Nick,

Dave K.'s how-to articles are a tremendous asset to those just starting out. Vedder and Herzog's stuff pretty much speaks for itself, both are great writers and Dave does a good job of keeping us informed of issues we sport anglers should be aware of.

I'd like to see an article on how differnt guys dissect a hole with their technique of choice. You know, some photos of holes with a narrative of how they would approach that piece of water. I know that's walking a thin line between "how" and "where", but knowing how Zog would fish a hole with a spoon would be really cool.
Just a suggestion.

Still loving your mag after many years. STS and a certain girlie mag Hef puts out are the only ones I subscribe to any more. Keep up the good work......and think about heading up here next month for some fishing.

Oh yeah......don't get caught up in the drama, you can always find some on the fishing BB's.

Hey Nick: Just so you don't get too big headed. The mag isn't PERFECT. Read this from another board.

Dear Salmon Trout Steelheader,

I’m trying to put my finger on it, but just can’t seem to come up with a good answer. Your magazine “Rocks”, I anticipate every issue. Yesterday, opening my mailbox I see the title that brings me much reading pleasure hiding under bills, junk mail, and letters from family, disregarding all of the above I view the cover, man what a beautiful—“WHAT IS THAT –THE FRIGGEN LABLE IS COVERING THE SUBJECT”—I attempt to carefully remove the label and do so by taking the head of that beautiful Nushagak King as well.

So, what’s the deal with that? Covered like fuzzed out **** —(not that I know anything about that) the best cannot be seen. Dan Ross may as well be holding a crappie. I think to myself, have I not paid my dues? No. Do I need to pay more? What is wrong with covering other parts of the cover? How about a plastic bag? Hey!!!! Maybe use the back. Not that I have ANYTHING against your labels. They are great labels—THE BEST, you could send me a full issue of just labels, I like them so much, but if I’m fully paid for my subscription, please place the label where the fish don’t shine.

Now I know that you can get really tired of licking those mailing labels, and that your tounge gets so dry you just gotta stop and have a beer, and maybe you were in a hurry to get out fishing. But next issue be more careful would ya? Maybe you can get Bill to come help you lick them. I would love to help, but I think I'm busy that day!

I've been communicating with Riverliver and it looks like he is going to write a story for STS. Great idea Dan. I think an illustrated "reading water column" would be easy enough to come up with.

Nick,

More articles from our friends north of the border (the Canadians!) would be great. It seems like they often utilize different inovative techniques that could be a breath of fresh air for us folks down here.

Keep up the good work! I love STS and have learned quite a bit from it! Thanks

nick I love the magazine and this extra issue was great but why so many fly fishing articles? how about an article on springers and maybe proper tuning techniques for plugs and just a genereal over look at some methods of fishing for springers. I have every issue from the last 2 1/2 years and I didn't see much on lower river springer fishing?

but I just got your float fishing video in the mail and after sitting in the hospital all day I gotta go watch it....

I think the fly fishing articles are what make the current issue so good. I really enjoy STS for its diverse content.

I would like to see a step by step how-to-tie/fish for a new fly each issue. How about the Night Dancer in the next issue?

How about adding 1 page per issue dedicated to short little blurbs on "what to do if", "did you know", "Here's how you", "If you forget your.... try this as a substitute.." just little shorts w/ or w/out an illustration. Theres another outdoor magazine that does this but the content was more national and broad based.... you could tailor it to the STS fisherman.

just an idea.

Just had another idea…. The one thing that drives me crazier than anything else, is people that don’t know anything or very little about boat ramp etiquette (boat ramps primarily used by fisherman during those prime usage hour’s). You know those people that tie the ramp up much longer than need be… With so many new people getting boats and using these ramps – I think it would be well worth STS’s efforts to provide some pointers…. i.e. turn off the headlights, don’t put the bunkers to deep when loading, using the middle of a two lane ramp or block the traffic waiting for the lane their boat is in, powering a boat on/off when possible, or how to do it when you cant use power, the list could go on forever – most is gained by experience, but that could be sped up via your magazine.

I will second the double thumbs up to STS and Nick. In fact the day before I got the March issue one of my clients bounced his slinkie off the lens in my sunglasses. Man I was glad I had my sunglasses on. Then I opened the Mag to find a picture of me ( I had never seen it before) and under it it said were sun glasses to protect yourself from the sun and sinkers how did they know???

Wetaline-
I totally agree about boat ramp etiquette.

The only problem is, the slow moving boat ramp reptiles you're referring to cannot read so I don't think an article would help.

Keep the ideas coming. It's good stuff!

I agree with DanS on the "How to fish this stretch of water" idea. Using actual photos versus illustrations would really help. Especially if you cover different methods like spoons, floats, etc.

Obviously judging by Dan's selection of periodicals the pictures are the important issue here.

I've been reading STS since the late 70's and have almost watched Nick "grow up" as his dad would put photos of him and write about him in the mag. Even after all these years it's still a great read.

I hang on every word Mr. Dave Vedder writes. The politics and conservation stuff is really important. I hear he knows a little about fishing too!

That Herzog guy, I guess he's OK.

Dunnington? He's a good writer, but I'd like Tony to move to Oregon and write about that area for a change.

Hey Nick!

Thanks for the great magazine! I like the section in STS where people write in to Herzog about situations encountered on the river and getting his opinion or suggestions. I'd like to see more articles about fishing techniques (like the bait buster, bobber fishing, how to make spinners, etc.) instead of articles on travel destinations. The diagrams of rigging that you've had in the recent issues is great stuff! What ever happened to Jed Davis? Tell Tom Gordon to shave before you take his picture!!!
