Hali stats
Went to the ranch all 3 days.
THUR. 5 for 5 hali, back to dock by 11:30
FRI. On our way out I said hi to Popeye who was standing on the back of his boat, nice to see you Popeye. 5 for 5 back at dock by 11:00. Said hi to Wak at the dock. I had never met him in person before but he is famous and he seems to handle well. I got this impression from meeting him when after I told him I reconized the name on his boat, he told me some guy even followed him home once to say hi (nice meeting you Wak, hope your sons friend is okay). Got a long nap on the day before (on Thurs) so we decided to drive back to Lincoln city (where we were staying) to drop off the fish and pick up the crab traps. Dropped 5 traps out of Depoe Bay and went bottom fishing for 4 hours (sea bass, lingcod and great weather), pulled the traps on the way in and got 39 keepers.
SAT. banged 3 keepers right off then it got crowded and the bite died. So we went on out to halibut hill. The wind went from about 15 to 20 knots and we picked up one foot more wind wave (can you say splash over the back while backing down!) Hooked up right away and caught another 20 incher, no other bites. So after an hour or so we headed back to the ranch (150'-200' shallower and not quite as rough...yet). I had to reel in 3 sublegals to finally get one keeper. It took us until 12:30 (on our final drift, we were beat) to get the last 2 keepers we needed to end our trip with 5/5 all three days (limits). Like others at the ranch we found lots of cod and the hali were small. Except for the first day when we got two 50 inchers the rest were 34"-42". On Sat we had to release 6 that were to small before finally getting our 5 keepers.
All in all a great trip, sure glad the weather predictions were off.
Great to see the ifish flags and talk with some of you.
