Thanks to the Coho Quest
I would like to send a personal thanks to the skipper and crew of the Coho West. She is a 26' Stripper super nice. To all who see her and her skipper wave and say hi. They go above and beyond.
Here is our story:
Thursday was great for our skipper and crew Four halibut and eight nice ling cod.
Friday rolled around. Checked the crab pots and rebaited and then headed for the ranch. At about 12 miles out we hit a nice wave and for some reason it felt like the boat jumped out of gear. Long story short we think maybe a broken shaft as the boat got hot (Water pump not working) and the boat wouldn't shift gears. We crank up the kicker and head towards Newport with the seas pushing us south and the tide running we were making about 1 to 2 miles an hour. So we called the coast gaurd for the long tow home. They sent out a craft in distess and ask any vessel in the general vicinity to give us a hand. The Coho West didn't hesitate she was two miles to our west and she turned around on a dime to give assistance this while many boats went around us heading to their fishing. She caught up and took our line for the tow back to Newport. She gave up her day of fishing and refused any sort of compensation we offered. We finally managed to get them to accept our catch of crabs for the day but that was very little comapred to the amount of fuel I'm sure that she used. If anyone knows this boat or the skipper please forward me theire info so that the crew and skipper of the Mustang Sally can send a more proper thank you.
Once again it is a skipper like him that make us all safe on the big blue.
Dan

I would like to give thanks to Ray on Sea Lion for pulling our crab pots and bringing them home for us as well.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
Dan, you are welcome but part of that credit goes to my crew. They pulled the pots while I kept the bow pointed into the near breaking swell on the South Jetty. Let me know when you would like to stop by and pick them up.
Northriver Dave met us at the dock with a half rack of cold refreshments that he forgot to take with him, what a guy. I am glad that we were able to help you get the traps back and that you were able to be towed back safely to the dock. As long as your departure and return ratio is equal to 1 it was a good trip.
I hope Mustang Sally is back on the water soon.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
That's what it is all about folks. The ocean is a dangerous place--crap happens. It is incumbent on all mariners to aid a vessel in distress.
Those folks took the time to do the right thing, and deserve a hand
When you are on the salt (or any body of water), remember this: If you spend enough time on the water, you will break down, pure and simple. It is best to make as many deposits in the Karma Bank as possible, so when you need to make a withdrawl, ya got a little in reserve!
Aid all mariners in distress--we are all brothers and sisters on the Big Blue.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
The question is does 'Coho West' belong to our tribe yet?
They should because that is the kind of people that we are as a group.
Did you invite them Dan?

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
I was thinking the same thing Pilar. Those are the type of people we have on this board and those are the type of people we need to keep recruiting.
I think we should be able to track them down somehow and ALL thank them for helping one of our Dogs.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
The boats name was actually the "Coho Quest".
When he pulled up along side of us we asked if he was headed to the ranch, he said yes but apon hearing someone was in need of help, fishing became his number two priority for the day. Those are the kind of guys you like to have fishing along side of you!
Oh and don't forget the story of the tow rope breaking as we were going through the jaws! What a dance that was! The kicker kept us pointed in the right direction and we just missed playing bumper boats while trying to re-rope the boats. Not a fun situation!
Once again a huge thanks to the "Coho Quest" for the ride home!

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
Ican not imagine not stopping to aid a boat in distress. I am certainly glad to see that others share that point of view! I have towed three boats in, given a spare battery once, and circled a boat in distrss until the CG arrived, once. Not a lot of assistance but all the opportunities I have had and known about. I have also recieved aid three times. Broke my out drive u-joint and was towed, had bad fuel once (tank was replaced), and had a coil go bad on me once. Each time someone stepped up! It is a big ocean and without each other it is a grim place to have problems. I would like to add my sincere thanks for the Coasties....they are an awesome group who do a tough job for us all, everyday. My hats off to those who put priorities in the right places..professionally and personally. I am proud to share water and time with all of you.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
Thanks goes out to not only to the Coast Guard, but the Auxiliary Coast Guard as well. These guys and gals volunteer their time and boats to help everyone out when the Coast Guard can't get there.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
Thanks Dave for getting that boat name right. I should write emails after midnight. It was the Coho Quest. I didn't think of mentioning Ifish I sure wish I had. When they stopped to talk to us after we were cleaning the boat We were all to busy giving our thanks. May King Nepture offer him a 100 pound halibut for his generosity. Once again if anyone ever sees this boat and can get his info I would be thankful. Hindsite I wish I would have gotten it when I had the chance.

Re: Thanks to the Coho Quest
She is down and out for the next few weeks. Broken shaft (Man that just sounds painful). The top part of the outdrive is going in for a complete overhaul just because and should be back in approx two weeks. If we get a June season she should be good to go. If not Tunaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. in June it will be.
