Default Hali stats for Corrirod

Thursday out of Garibaldi: One 40" black cod, one 42+" skate, NO HALIBUT!!!!

Friday: Boat repairs in the morning, on the water at 2pm for test run, got the bar and said "This dog's gotta run!", reached the Pile at around 3pm talked to a couple Salty Dogs and said, "This dog's gotta run!", out to the Ranch about 4pm and brought the luck with me, first run big bite missed, second run..BAM 40" hali bonked. Passed the lucky rig to Puffin but he didn't need it for anything but the luck because as I tossed it to him he hooked up and as soon as I left him he hooked up again for their limit!

Saturday: semi-rough seas out, fished all day with NorRivDave and PeterMac, landed umpteen million Sablefish , finally hit a 37" hali towards the end of the day, ran to the Pile and within 10 minutes PeterMac slams a fat 39" and NorRivDave cans a very nice mid 30's ling. Pounded our way home with El Shadai. Wished I'd have remembered to duct tape that pillow to my pitooty!

Thanks for the company Pete/Dave! These 2 are great guys and great crew! I'll give Pete a chance to elaborate on a "huge" fish he landed!  However, I have a picture that's worth a million words! I think we should have a Salty Dog bid war with this picture, all the Dogs bidding to see it and Pete bidding to keep it secret! What do you think Dave?

First of all, I have to say the Rod is a first class boatman. That was no easy trip back, but he managed it like a pro.

Story? What big fish, I don't know what your talking about, I wasn't even on that boat, I was in Portland getting ready for mother's day. That wasn't me in that picture...... Ya, well there might be just a little itty bitty story to tell  .

It kinda had to do with this REALLY big fish. Right guys? You thought it was a big fish too, right? I fought, and I fought, I cursed and I cursed at this monster. My back screamed, my bicep howelled, my knees did there best to keep me upright against the gunnel in the choppy swell. Minutes turned into what seemed like hours, this beast would then take back everything that I had gained, time after time. I became delerious, I was anticipating how much filet weight I would cache of this PIG. Finally, The end is near, my last attempts to get this big guy to the boat were succesful, I had finaly conquered the largest fish to be caught out of Newport this first season, I was to be some sort of local hero, possibly a legend (remeber delerius at this point)? I holler at my fishing mates to ready the gaf, harpoon and pistol, surely we would need all three. And at last, there it is, coming into view, yes, I hear someone say "what's the matter, is it bigger than you thought"? NO WAY, NO WAY, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING TOO ME!!!! Things are beginning to get blurry, for a brief moment I think I have passed out and am dreaming, because this looks nothing like a record Halli, it looks more like a FLIPPIN 5 POUND SABLE FISH!!!!!!!!! What? Huh? What the heck? NOOOOOOOOOOOO, this can't be possible!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAA!!! This little b*****d had wound himself around another rig, so I guess I was fighting a 20 ton charter boat.

Well, needless to say, I was a little embarrassed  , but extremely dissappointed . I proceeded to handline in the wayward tuffline, surely my halibut was on the end of this one. I was pulling and pulling, still a little delerious, my fantasy changed from mere hero to certain "legend status", halibut on a hand line HA!!

Well, to make a long story end, after spending way too much time pulling this "ghost line" into the boat, I was able to retrieve someones $3.50 48 oz lead. Oh ya, and I broke my brand new rod too.

The only consolation was that I took that double hook set up, the one that I hand-lined in, and tied to an extra rod, dropped a herring at the pile, and much to our suprise, pulled up a 39" flattie.

Unbelievable, freaking unbelievalbe.

Rod, thanks for a great trip, and thanks Dave for the roof Friday night... I had a blast!

Pictures were taken on the regular camera so we'll have to wait to finish the roll and get them developed. :depressed:

I must say, Pete was, to quote a line from Shrek, "a donkey on the edge" after seeing that little sablefish! I've never seen a man on such a frantic mission to pull about 200 yds of tuffline from the depths by hand. His pulling started quite nicely as we tried to manage the incoming line but with each pull he became more frantic until finally I gave up trying to coil all the incoming line and let him flail it around like a madman! I almost couldn't drive the boat after that because I was laughing so hard!

All I can say though is at least he had "a" fish on the line and all the roar wasn't completely for nothing. And he was able to take the rig that caused him this anguish and turn it into a Hali!

As funny as this story sounds, just multiply it times two and that's how hard Rod and I were laughing. And wait until you see the picture of Peter's catch! He wouldn't even look up at the camera until I mentioned cold beer!
What a fun day!
Thanks for the ride Rod!

Mel, the Doc gave me Scopamine - I was bullet proof. Will never leave port without it.

I was glad to have been able to provide the entertainment for Dave and Rod.

Weather permitting, I'll be doing a repeat performance on the Pilar Friday!

Rod,

Congrats on a good week of Hbt's, and thanks for the good review. I saw you in the parking lot in your holding pattern on Friday, but by the time I came back through you had "vaporized"... apparently on your way out.

Eric, was that you in the background picture of "the black rocket" with all their fish? If it was then I did just miss you. I pulled up behind them right after they took that picture. I sure could have used an extra hand onboard!
