Default Post Spawn

Went fishing with my brother this weekend at an impoundment that is a pretty consistent producer for LM but only caught 5 fish between us...

I've never fished here at the end of August because I'm gearing up for hunting season (and the kids in school) , but the fish seemed really lethargic. There were several bumps on creature baits but they didn't seem too interested. Spinnerbaits caught a couple, but again, nothing to write home about.

Does anyone have some general info on the biology of post spawn bass? The water seemed a little cold (sorry, didn't have a temp reading) and we went through everything in the tackle box and varied retrieves, etc. In my fragile mind, I would've thought they would be really hungry after the spawning process.
Thanks

Its not really post spawn anymore, the spawn happened back in april, may, or june most likely. We are in more of a summer pattern right now so the fish are generally going to be tucked back into shade/cover. The best fishing this time of year is early in the morning or in the evening. If there are any docks on this lake that you fish try those in the middle of the day for bass.

Good luck out there.

Do you still think it happened that early given how long our spring was? This hasn't been a conventional year in my thinking....

In the lakes around my house the largemouth were done spawning in May, the first batch was in April and the smallies in the willamette were (mostly) done by June.

As soon as the water hits about 54 degrees in the lakes the largemouth start looking for bedding sites.

I was catching fish in late July that were still plump females. I'm east of the cascades at 4500 feet though.
That aside, how long does the "post spawn" period generally last? Your information on the "summer" pattern was helpful though. Thanks!

I think the classic "post spawn" patterns usually last a couple weeks to a month after the spawn, after that the bass move to summer patterns.

Really no wood or structure to speak of...kind of in the Oregon desert with some millfoil and a main river channel that pools up with lots of shallower water (1-3 ft.) Hope that helps describe it...
