Default 5/8 Chicky Ranch: Last one there, but......

Four of us on Phil's new Osprey "Andiamo"...didn't get to the chicken ranch until 11:30 (story later). Result was still good - 4 fish in 2 drifts, 3 over 50".

Stan (Phil's pop-in-law) needed Jeff's help to hold up his hog

Yours truly...this one hit 65 lbs on the scale. Like the hot pants?

Phil working his fish to the top, sitting on his keester. May as well bring him a margarita....

Jeff & his hog

On the way back, coming across the rockpile, I began to smell cigar smoke. We investigated and found these guys trolling in between the millions of baby jellyfish:

The "late to the ranch" story can be summed up by the following: "Volvo KAD 44 EDC". The volvo turbo-diesel has something very tempermental happening with it that has something to do with the turbo boost compressor, it's pressure sensing / sending unit, and the electronic control module. Couldn't get more than 14 knots out of it. We made numerous stops, changing both fuel filters, bleeding the system 5 or 6 times, and drifted at the rockpile for over an hour. After talking to Puffin Jon and hearing his report of the fast limits at the ranch, we decided to go for it since we were sure it wasn't a fuel problem, but rather the turbo compressor which was limiting us to 14 knots. So thanks Jon for the encouragement!

I won't be back out 'till next Friday; see y'all then.

p.s. Any of you have any experience with this engine? We're looking for a mechanic who can trouble-shoot this thing.

Yaa deepline, all signs point to Cook as the only "authorized rep" in Oregon for the diesel. I heard an earful from a former dealer in Newport; said that Volvo yanked distributorships from all businesses unless they only deal with diesels. Said that there are a lot of upset volvo diesel owners in Newport who can not get service or parts locally. How do you say "thank you very much" in Swedish?

We did call Cook; said they have a 30 day waiting list right now. Any idea how to sweet-talk them into helping us sooner?

Thanks....Mark Mc

Mark Mc,

Looks like you guys had a great day, despite all the boat troubles. Got the story from Marty earlier this evening.

I usually use Dale at Chinook Marine, in Chinook WA. for Volvo outdrive repairs. For my money, they are as good of a Volvo shop as there is in the NW. Always treated me right on repairs and always got the work done quickly. I don't no if they do warranty repair work on the diesels or not? They are usually open on Saturday, you could give them a call tomorrow and find out. If he does not work on them, he probably would have a suggestion, they have been a Volvo shop for a long time, serving both sport and commercial boats.

It would be a long tow over to Chinook, but might be faster than Cooks?

Hope this helps out.

Jerry

Hey Jerry thanks a bundle for the suggestion. There's no way Phil's gonna wait 30 days. Said he'd tow the boat all the way up to Seattle to get it fixed sooner up there (Coastal Marine). Thanks again & looking forward to meeting you sometime!

Mark,

I hope all works out for your friend Phil, it sounds like a great boat that he bought, like to take a look at it someday. I have a feeling that our paths might cross later this summer.

Thanks to "Slugranch" for posting Dale's phone number, I didn't have it. I will be calling him soon myself for some replacement hoses and other parts.

Must go start work on my own boat now, good luck.

Jerry

Thanks for all the love from the fleet! I brought Andiamo up to Cooks today. I might have her back in 2 to 3 weeks if the moons align. The problem may be "limited" to a $752 compressor clutch assembly (anyone won the lottery lately that feels like pitching in? Or maybe have a relative on the highly profitable Volvo Company's board?) If the weather settles down and proves the wind forecasters wrong, I may see you out at the Chicken Ranch in my other boat (21' Seaswirl Sable for sale);"Escape Pod" has a better record than Andiamo anyway. She has limited the boat with hogs every time out!
