Default Cowlitz Smelt Report Wednesday 2/18 12:00pm

Totally dead.

Don't waste your time or fuel.

Just stopped by Bob's and Chuck can't get anything done because the phone keeps ringing off the hook non-stop so I thought I would post this to maybe help alieviate some of the phone calls.

I believe in some years that these critters are as late as April and even May.

Hopefully these were just two pilot runs and they will be here yet in good numbers.

No smelt today, my love has gone away.
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No smelt today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don't know the reason why.

You probably don’t remember that one Little Hunter or weren’t old enough to have ever heard it.

I talked with a bio at the Vancouver WDFW office today regarding smelt and if I get time later today or tonight I will start a post and pass on the info.

Yea, rub it in C&E!

My experience is that on the average, the last week in Feb has been the best for smelt in the Cowlitz.

Pilot runs indead, the females still haven't made it in yet,not in any numbers anyhow.
Although if I recall four years ago there wasn't much of a run,do to ocean conditions or what ever, and the biggins should be offspring from that run...but the WDFW did predict a large return of three year fish so I guess we'll see soon if they know their smelt. The seagulls are still hanging out at Sacajawea harrassing the ducks, yesturday there were about 200 of em on the grass by Martins Dock, they're waiting on the same thing as the rest of us.
