Default Thank you NOAA.......NOT!!!

I'm so glad I scrapped my plans to go halibut fishing from the NOAA predictions today. What was it again oh yeah, 8' swell with 4-5' chop. I called the bar report this morning and it was 2-4 long ocean swell and Lepper just checked the bandon bar (one of the worst on the S.coast) and he said you could take a rubber raft across it! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy about sitting here at work today.

It's a conspiracy to prevent overcrowding.

I'd take the couch anyday for a halibut. You have the rest of the year to suck up. Halibut season only lasts 6.

Man she's gonna hate me.

They weren't that far off on their prediction TC, it all depended on where you were.

As we pulled in to Port Orford, the guys said "oooo, it's flat". I said, we'll see once we get out from behind Cape Blanco. It looked like glass from the dock.

Once we cleared the protection of Blanco, it got rough. The further we went, the worse it got. It was managable, but the last 10 miles we were crawling.

The wind waves were easily 4' at times. The swells not too bad. Any time we'd travel through a squall, the wind would kick up and so would the seas.

Once we got out there, it started calming down. On the way back, we saw a few long ocean swells that were easily in excess of 10'.

Tomorrow should be nice...the wind waves were dying out by the time we got back in early afternoon.

tailcahser- don't worry, they'll make up for it. NExt time you go and they predict 2-4 it'll be 8-10 and 25 knots when you get out!

Tailchaser - funny, these things only happen when I DON'T go. Tried to tell Pilar it was silly to even go down there. He said, Yeah, you're right. It sounds like it is setting up to be nasty, but what the heck, we'll hang out in the bay and play with Mr. F's boat if nothing else...

When I go... It is usually the opposite. We think, Nawww... NOAA's got it all wrong again. It'll flatten out and we'll have a nice day on the ocean. Those are the times I get to lay awake all night with the wind rocking the truck no-so-gently.

I sure wish we lived closer. It wouldn't be so bad to have a day go bust if it didn't entail a 6hr drive fer nuthin'.

The bad part is that I live right here in Coos Bay, but my crew had to have an all or nothing decision to take off from work today as of last night. To say the least Lepper is biting all of his nails off sitting at his house threatening to call and cuss out the NOAA guy in Medford. You know it's bad when the preacher of the local church is threatening to cuss someone out!  He He. Unfortunately he has to go to a wedding on a Friday night in Portland no less. So he's really hating it. I at least can go the next two days. Sorry dave but don't look at the pictures when I come back, you might get in trouble with the wife the next time this sort of thing comes up.

I couldn't agree more. The 'predictions' weren't accurate at all. We came down Friday too late to really get anything going just to see a very nice looking ocean. Saturday was, well, it was Saturday. In fact, if anyone heard about a boat that experienced electricial problems (no power at all), that would have been us.... Quite a day. 35 - 40 miles really is a long way out there when something happens. Thank goodness for the Coast Guard!

It just goes to show you that ya need to put your hairy eyeball on the water before you call a trip. Personally I would rather have the forecast error on the safe side than the other way around. Better to miss a trip than not to return from one .
