First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
First Ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
At least that is what I want to be posting when I get back from our trip out tomorrow to kill BFB.
Talked to Pilar yesterday and asked if he had a shrimp pot ready to drop, answer was no, so last night I built a shrimp pot, got 600 feet of rope and some floats rigged up.
I figure if we can bring the pot in with one shrimp it will be a huge success
Any suggestions for ocean shrimping bait? they use a lot of cat food in Hoods Canal I think.

Oh and you KNOW that John would hate for the first sport shrimp to be landed on the Pilar
Roy, did he take the chart? As I recall, it didn't go that far south But we were looking at a new one in his office the other day... wonder if he has it along?

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
I've done well with fresh carcass of salmon or bottom fish. The oilier the better (tuna??). They devour clams too. We hung steamers and horse clams by the boat and the dock shrimp cleaned out the horse clams overnight. Horse clams can't close their shell all the way and they paid the price. I include a can of cat food for good measure and oil content (fish flavors, Puss and Boots is a favorite of Puget Sound rec shrimpers).
I think the little buggers are attracted to and eat just about the same stuff as crabs.
I hope you are successful. I'd try to find a spot on a ledge to deeper water. Rocky is good. Leeward side of the drift as they would benifit from the protection of the structure. Stonewall banks is just not very deep, but they may be there. Good Luck!

When I hear back from him, I'll ask if he took his Newport chart along. It would be interested if the approx. location you have is one that we spotted on the chart & thought might work when we were perusing it Monday.

Nice hat Mel
Pm - John gave me directions to fish camp.
I will be bringing several shad with me for bait, both shrimp and halibut.
I am starting to wish I had made the trap bigger   I threw it together in a big hurry last night.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
BOE-
Used to Shrimp with the folks in Hoods Canal as a kid. The ONLY catfood to use is Puss-n-boots seafood medly i think is the flavor. Im serious a few weeks before shrimping season up there, you can't find a can of p-n-b within 50 miles. If you do happen to find one they run 6-8$ a can!!! Should have no problems finding it down here.
Ohhh man did I just let the "puss" out of the bag?
GOOD LUCK!!! Mmmm fresh shrimp and drawn butter......YUMMY!!!!

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
Puss n Boots is easy to find now along Hood Canal. Sold by the case for around $16.00 most of the time. I used it for the first four years or so... It does OK, but I make a mix of my own... and my results nearly doubled. Off the top of my head.....
4-6 cans of seafood flavored cat food. This is used as a binder. It's very sticky!
4-6 cans of cheap tuna in oil (or use ground/pulverized old bait)
Small box of dry seafood flavored cat food to absorb oils and juices.
A few TBSP Mike’s Glo Scent Shrimp Oil
Mix it up and let it sit and absorb all juice/oil and then mix some more. Pack itloosely in your bait containers... (I use tennis ball tubes with 1/4 holes drilled in a few dozen places) whatever size fits your bait cage and freeze it. Freeze the remainder and take it with you to refresh your bait. If you don't use it all, refreeze it when you get home. You can always keep adding to it too. I do that all the time.
Good luck BOE! I know you can do this!

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
Hey BOE,
Go by the Otter Rock Fish Camp and grab some of that shad in the freezer (to the left of the front porch). Shad works like magic on crabs, so it should be good for shrimp. There's plenty there so help yourself.
If you need directions, let me know and I'll email them.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
Well, shoot! Three things come to mind.
First, did the pot sit flat on the bottom?
Second, was it pulled quickly?
Third and I don't know if it applies in the ocean... but I like to find ledges in the canal. I drop my pots about 50' away from a steep drop off. For some reason, shrimp tend to congregate there. I use a combo of charts, GPS and of course fish finder to accomplish this.
On our fish finder, I see what I refer to as "shmoutz" near the bottom. It doesn't look like fish or a large clump of seaweed. It's more like a ghost image of a bait ball.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
I talked to an old commercial guy the other day and he said there were shrimp to be found on the East side of the pile. I whipped out the chart, and he pointed to the 35/36/37 fathom region just East of the center trough in the Pile. He said that the netters wouldn't work this area because of the rocky and rising bottom.
I think he was giving me the straight scoop as he remembered it. It might be worth a try to make a drop there on a Pile run.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
a couple things learned.
Was concerned about the pot drifting in the ocean with 600 feet of line, but it was right where we left it. The approx 35-40 lb pot held fine.
We used shad for bait which may or may not have been a good bait, but it is what we had.
The anchor puller worked great for getting the pot to the top. It didnt take long to drop the rope and run to the pot once it got to the top.
Floating line isnt the best thing when you have 600 feet of rope and 300 feet of depth and the boat has a prop.
We did use a weight on the line to keep the slack down so somebody wouldnt get hung up on it, but we had to pull up the slack line and remove the weight to get the anchor puller to work.
Interesting experiment, We just need to find the location. We did not shrimp structure, we shrimped a depth and rough location based on what I was told by a commercial shrimper, but I think if we looked around we would have had a better chance. It was kind of a drop the pot and lets get to the chicken ranch we got BFB to kill.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
Hey Roy, I was talking to your dad today. Guess what, he was fishing by the house, using his trout rod, with 4lb test line and a small shrimp tail. Would you belive he hooked and landed a 59.5 lb Spring CH. It was not clipped so he had to turn it back. He had his camera, but no film. He yelled for his neighbor, he had film but no camera and he was on the other side of the river. Kind of like the time a bull elk raised his head up and hit his arrow just as he was going to relese. ----11111!!!!!???????) Oh well.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
The best shrimp bait that I've used is uncured salmon roe.
Set the pots on structure, rocky drops and ledges.
Use a anchor or weight (10lb downriger ball will work) above the pots so wave action doesn't move the pot and scare the shrimp.
Use sinking line, like groundline for your pot rope.
An overnight soak is best.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
I just inherited some small hole shrimp pots. I read through all the threads that had anything to do with Oregon shrimp but there was no definative answer.
BOE, Did you ever catch any on later trys?
I've got plenty of line and have been considering dropping it on the way out to the CR in a spot I've got picked out.
I guess the only thing it could hurt is my arms . . .

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
I'm interested in shrimp, or tiger or spotted prawns, too. I have 3 shrimp pots, either half or three-quarter inch square openings. I've tried them a couple of times, none yet. Tried a place about 2 to 4 miles NE of the ranch, that was a disaster. That's how I first learned about hagfish!!! It's obvious to me (and especially to the crew that day) why hagfish are aka slime eels!!! What a mess that was, glad I was driving the boat.
I've also tried the rockpile, no luck there either. Running out of patience for it, may try Nelson's Island. At least I won't ruin my back (or the crew's back) unless we first burn up the pot puller! From what I've heard, the big prawns are more common in southern OR. Sure would like to get some of the big prawns.

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
You got slime eels in 600 foot of water, right Ron?
In the Puget sound I find them pretty consistently on edges and drop offs at depths 200 to 300 feet. We actually just used a chart picked a spot and got some prawns there. I did the same thing on Vancouver island. With some local help that made all the difference.
That depth and edge sounds alot like the rockpile off Newport. The question is are there any shrimp there? I did try this with BC shrimp gear at 1/2 mesh netting. Right off Newport in 90 feet. I caught a coonstripe, just one. Also got a trap snagged on something and lost it. That was on a drop off from 65 to 90 feet and on down.
Last tidbit is intel from some years back off Depoe. A charter boat was fishing a reef that is called Tacklebuster up the coast north of Lincoln city. And all the rockfish hitting the deck were horking up big prawns, said to be tiger prawns.
What hole did you drag this thread out of? .... LOL.
I got gear and some interest, anyone want to play find the shrimp in Oregon?

Thats a good clue. The top of those pinacles may work because the smell runs off the sides like water off your head. The shrimp hang out on the sides of those pinacles and are lured up. It would work well using glycerine as the base for your bait because glycerine sinks in water yet holds smell as good as oil.

Count me in. I think it would be a great excercise on nice halibut days.
I have one nice large square 1/2" mesh pot and one smaller 1/2" mesh pot. The other pots are 7/8" mesh pots and probably aren't going to turn up much on the Oregon coast.
I read through just about every shrimp thread in the Salty dogs! This one had the most replies and the most relevant info
Ron M,
I think I'm going to give it a run even if its just once. As is said, anywhere at the top of a big drop off is the best bet. Lets give it a try.
Ultimately, if I ever catch anything in a given spot, moving around area until I get a better haul would be the plan.

Last year in Canada we caught some spotted prawns. they were in about 5-600 feet of water on the low side of a large drop off, (100 ft cliff).

Re: First ocean sport caught shrimp landed 5/9/03
We catch the hell out of them in the San Juans and Canada as well. My new pots came from the house my grandmother just sold on San Juan Island Just above a dropoff is perfect.
We just don't have a lot of that kind of structure off the Oregon coast. At least not close.
I'm surprised that nothing came of dropping on top of Stonewall . . .
