Default Your Opinions....

On this boat manufacturer. I came across these awhile ago but have yet to really get a chance to investigate them.

Glacier Bay Cats

I recieved some literature from them and have yet to watch the video. I am looking at the 2240SX. It goes for just under 50K with twin 4 stroke 115's on it.

I am intrigued by the cat hull designed for displacement instead of planing. From what I have researched so far this is a very stable boat that can handle any situation that a sane person would want to be in.

I want to chose a target price range and save towards it, so my questions are:
Is this too much money for this boat?
Are there better options out there for a 22' boat for the cost?
Any experiences with this manufacturer and this style of boat?

Anything else anyone can think of that would help would be appreciated.

This is something that I will probably move on in next year or two depending the financial situation of course.

I fished out of a 24 foot glacier bay on Midway Island outfitted with Twin 130 honda 4 strokes. The boat handled quite nice. FYI- the boat located on Midway is called the Midway Challenge because it was driven from Honolulu to Midway. That is over 1200 miles without stops in a 24 foot boat. Pretty impressive. Talked with the guys who did it, they packed ALOT of fuel on board.

BnC
I read about that one, pretty impressive, nothing like a personal delivery. That is quite the test of a boat and one of the reasons I am interested in this maker.
I can gaurantee that I will never have the urge to do something like that but it is nice to know that a boat has been thoroughly tested like that.

Anyone know where I can pick up a cheap pair of matched 4 stroke 90's?

That makes the boat a bunch cheaper, only 32K.

Their delivery was profiled in Trailer Boat Magazine a while back. You should be able to get a reprint of the article from them. As I remember, they were impressed with the boat.

Cats are nice!! Very stable and comfortable to ride in for most conditions ...
they do tend to "pound" a little in certain types of ocean, though, as they are
planning hulls when up on step. They use a lot less fuel than a mono hull and
are a lot quicker (faster) for any given power source than a mono.

If there are any questions you have about CATS, I'd be happy to give you
any insights I might have ...

I'll never go back to a mono!!
Please take a look at the web page below ...

Slow Roll,

First, REAL men take thier boats into the surf!! Look at all the Dorymen at
Pacific City if you don't believe me!!

Second, I don't understand the mechanics of it, but some Cat hulls are full
displacement all the time and others become planing hulls when they "get
up on step". Mine becomes a planing hull at about 11 or 12 knots. Either way,
the hulls are *very* efficient, use less fuel than a similarly sized mono-hull
and are a lot faster for any given power source.

My 30 footer (33.5' overall) weighs about 7 tons dock weight (fueled and ready
to go). It has a pair of 250hp MerCruiser diesels and will turn 37.5 knots (about
43 mph) on flat water. Very good on fuel consumption.

Good luck on your savings plan!!

FA,
Sat down and watched the video last night, pretty darned impressive what they took these boats into. Got a kick out of it when they took them into the surf and ran the waves. After the big disclaimer "It is not recommended to take any boat into the surf".
I would be glad to let anyone borrow the video who wants to watch it. Runs about 35 minutes. Shows basic performance of the boats and their record setting runs that they have done. Geez, now I am sounding like a salesman for them, which I am not by the way.

FA, they say that these are displacement hulls and do not plane. Am I not understanding this correctly?
