Default Adequate Hali Reel?

OK, I've got a rookie question. I've got my grandpa's Penn Master Mariner fishing reel (349), and I want to use it for fishing Halibut. I realize it won't be the best reel to have, but should it be sufficient? I have read alot of the great salty dog advice, and I feel like it should work. The drag seems to work fine, but I realize I might have to 'thumb it' pulling up a monster. Also, it doesn't have a line guide on the level wind. Is this a huge problem with tuffline?

Otherwise, it definately has the capacity and it seems like a very sturdy reel. This will be my first trip, and I thought I would give it the old college try before spending too much on gear my first time out (especially since I would like to see different gear in action before purchasing something).

I plan on using this with an old roller tipped rod, 80 lb tuffline, 16-32 oz of weight, and some no-excuse halibut leaders (if I can get the crimps right).

Thanks for any advice.

Wade, bring it. If it is a problem, I've got you covered with a spare that will work.

Lousy reel. Mail it to me to get rid of for you.

I have two of them and they're good reels. The drag can be replaced without tearing the reel apart. They hold about 2/3 of the line that a 4/0 Senator takes and have larger drag washers. Penn quit making them a few years ago and parts are hard to find. You can get after market drag parts.
I have one in my bag as a back up for this weeks halibut fishing.

should do the job. I'm wondering if I need a levelwind, I know it would be more convenient, but can I get by w/o?

Thanks for the input everyone. I feel better about using it now. Especially since it sounds like there will be backups available in case this one desintigrates (not that it will of coarse  ).
