Default Portable/hand held radios

Hey, you guys? I'm probably going to the OTC dinner... but I would love to listen in on a radio. Is there such a thing as a portable and where would I get one?
I'd like to go out on the beach and listen.

What is their distance?

All I have is a Freddy's and a Radio Shack, but it sure would be fun to listen in on something? Maybe you will be so far out that I can't... right?

Jen

Any programmable scanner will do. Just do a google search " Marine VHF frequencies" and program in the specific VHF channels. The better the antenna the better the reception.

Anyhow... I have a home scanner, but it's not portable. I'll go to Radio Shack and see what they have, I guess?

I don't have time to do a search and order one.

It's going to be tough to get reception if everyone is out 30-40 miles Jennie. I wouldn't waste too much $$ on it.

You'd have better luck if you got up high vs. near the beach I think. It's all about "line of sight". At sea level you won't get much reception but the higher the antenna the better luck you'll have. I still think we'll be out of range though.

If the surface temps (which seem very close to shore) actually reflect where the tuna are, you may not only hear us out there, you may see us too!

He's right.... as I mentioned the higher the antenna the better. I can heere all of the "tuna chat" from my PC house. My house is just off the beach at an elevation of 202 ft with the antenna on the roof (256ft above sea level).

Can someone who is going loan Jennie a handheld for the day? You might be able to listen from the charter office also.Or you could sweet talk the coasties into helping you out.
Good luck rick

Along those lines, ask the Coasties if you could do a ride along, and be out for the shotgun start!
