Just read a post where Jenny said that she needed to wear a particular hat while fishing (hope I got it right).
As I'm sittin' here waiting for opening day on the ocean I thought I'd relay my hat story which is how superstitions get going.
Couple of years ago, make that 7 years ago, I got a bb cap from my daughter. It is red with fishermen in various flailing poses all over it and it says "World Class DAD" over the bill.
Anyway
OPENING DAY rolls around and I grab a hat as I leave for Westport and my charter aboard the "
PLAYBOY TOO ".
We experienced a very windy day on the ocean and fishing was spotty. We hit a good bunch of about 0800. We were drifting like crazy and couldn't stay on them.
A gust of wind blew my hat into the water just as we began to reel the fish in and I thought I had lost it. Skipper said he would pick up the hat but I said no because I wanted to stay on the fish and didn't want to ruin the day for others.
Well we drifted off of the fish after we'd boated about 10. We ran and ran, drifted and drifted and mooched and mooched for about 2 hours with no results.
I, like others, was beginning to think that fishing was done for the day. The skipper said that we would make one more run and drift and we would call it a day.
We were running up the hill when the skipper shouted to get the net. He had spotted my hat and was going to pick it up. I thought that I was very lucky that I wouldn't have tell my daughter about having been mugged for the hat.
We set down to pick up the hat and of course everyone dropped their bait in before the boat even slowed down. I had just netted my hat when several cries of "fish on" were heard.
We limited on that drift.
I only wear that hat once a year. Still encrusted with salt and, I'm sure, embedded with plankton I have never not limited on opening day since then.
How did your superstition begin??
