4/0 Senator
For those interested I know how much 80lb tuffline fits on a 4/0 Senator with no backing
First I shop around and find that GIJoes is a little cheaper than the other local stores and I ask the kid behind the counter to fill it with 80lb tuffline. I would have liked to put on about 500 yards and backing underneath but I only had one reel and had no way of knowing how much backing to install. It would have been nice to put on the 500yds and then top off with backing and wind onto a second reel, I decided to just fill the reel and know I could reach bottom in any seas I will ever fish around here
The kid behind the counter holds the big spool with his hand for a drag applying tension, I wasnt sure he was getting it tight enough but he assured me he did this all the time
The big spool runs out of line before the reel is filled  So he takes the line off the reel and starts over with a new spool of fresh line. I ask if I can be the tension man and hold the spool applying tension on the line so it got wrapped nice and tight. He lets me, and I apply pressure that barely allowed the machine to wrap line on the reel.
At 740 yards the reel is full and my pocketbook is empty. If I ever get spooled I will have a heck of a story to tell.

Re: 4/0 Senator
Great Googly Moogly! That's 2,250' of line! I just had my 4/0 spooled w/300 yds of 80' TL. I wish I'd payed closer attention to how much backing they used.
If I were you, I'd take your existing setup to a place that can do it right. Maybe have them put half of what you have on there w/backing and put the other half on an empty spool for later use(good to have handy anywayz).
I would Love to be there to see THAT reel get spooled!

Re: 4/0 Senator
Gotcha!!!!!!
Hey BOE the pain in the butt you get from putting the backing on is nothing to the light wallet you get if you don't.
A 50H will hold about 575 of 80# powerpro. Don't ask me how I know this. And be really, really glad you didn't have to fill the intercontinental ballistic fishing reel the Diawa Sealine 910 aka the Rod Cod Special. The main features of this reel is the really huge spool, the trailer winch handle and the second handle across the spool.
I put 650 yds of 80# powerpro on and then had to use an additional 350 yds of 80# dacron to fill it clear full. I figure it would hold close to 1500 yds of the 80# powerpro. A thousand yards is 2/3 of a mile!
What kind of fish would it take to peel all that off?
BOE that fill should last you for years. Just turn the line around and refill with backing for a full spool every year before halibut. I just retired a 500 yd stretch of Powerpro 80# that went for 4 years. At 230 yds, it just wasn't long enough anymore. The line was a silver color from wear. I got my money's worth, I think.

Re: 4/0 Senator
The guys at FMS seem to have this down pat without using an extra reel/spool or having to turn it around. I've had plenty of large reels filled by them with 80lb dacron backing and then 300 yards of tuff over the top. They hit it within 20 yards every time. They just have enough practice to be able to tell how much room on the spool to leave.
Pilar said " What kind of fish would it take to peel all that off?"
How about a volkswagon sized Bluefin or Bill? I hope we get a chance to find out!

Re: 4/0 Senator
I'll have a nuclear powered Bluefin, 3/4 of a mile of line and a case of barley pop to go.

Re: 4/0 Senator
I agree with Mel, FMS does a better job of this, but it sounds like you got it done right.
Last year I respooled a 3/0 Senator at Joes. Never again! The first time I got hung up the line dived down into the spool. I cleared it out and then fished one spot until the spool was empty and then reeled it all back up with three pounds of lead. The spool now looks half empty!
Sounds like you did it right by adding the tension yourself.

Re: 4/0 Senator
rojo- 1100 feet? Holly cow. Minaki said they were getting them and he has some spots, didn't say (I forgot to ask) how dang deep.
I think I'll just ditch my chain and spool up some 80 lb tuff on the windless! No wonder Gene was lookoing at buying Electric reels.
PS- Anybody in my slip own there?

Re: 4/0 Senator
rojo -Trying to get everything together for the Ocean opener and be down mid June. I've been working on the old boat to get it sold all year. Just started yearly stuff on Miss B. I'll make it down cleaned or not. She'll just get covered with silver scales anyway.
Comm boys should be out before then. I'll call Keith before I come down just in case!
See ya!
PS- Got a note from Tom- he was talking like it was only 600 feet where they were fishing. Of course he had the electric reel too! Probably felt like twice as far to everyone else!

Re: 4/0 Senator
What type of knot do you guys use to attach the two lines? 80lb dacron and 80lb tough. I thought I would take Pilars advice and use my old line from last year To fill my main and backup reels.
Thanks
Brian

Re: 4/0 Senator
Drifty, double uni knot works great. If he gets you down that far you're done anyway and it's time to get a fire extinguisher for your drag washers.
