Default Fishing on the Blitz 5-3-03

A good friend of mine from work wanted to go and catch some fish on Saturday. So I called down to Newport Tradewinds Charters last Thursday and booked two seats on The Blitz to go out and do some bottom fishing.

We had 12 people fishing on the boat, and had a wonderful time.

Captain Mike is a great skipper, and made every effort to keep us on the fish. Resetting often when the bite cooled down, and making sure everyone on board had a good expereince.

The Pilar was fishing the same area we were, with his mate.

We ran into many rock fish boiling the water while feeding on crab larva. There were clowds of bait in the water, and fish boiling. Very cool to see.

I got to meet a fellow Ifisher on the boat.
Nice to have met you, Otter.

My buddy caught a couple of doubles, and reeled three lingcod to the surface at once. Two were hooked, and one was swimming with them all the way to the net.

Thanks again to Captain Mike Stowe on The Blitz, for making our trip so much fun.

I think my buddy will be a Salty Dog in the near future. We had a blast.

Peace, Tom

Puffins Crew, you guys looked good. I never got close enough to see you and know who the guy in the green coat was.

We found a way to get those surface boiling black rocks to bite. I grabbed the trout pole with the herring jigs on it and hung 2 oz of lead on that.

The next time I saw the boil I cast that right over it ... let out line and count to three ... slam the bail and jig .. wham bass on ... wham that's two wham .. theres three. Trout pole 6# test and drag ripping .. now we're fishing.

Those bass were flipping clear of the water. That and the solid black mass of them all frenzied on the snow like crab larvae.

The ocean never ceases to amaze me with something I've never seen before on almost every trip.

We got all black rocks and one canary. Then 4 lings on bottom hopping a trolling weight and a whole mooched herring. It really kicked up right before we left. The herring are in the bay on high slack.

We got into them 2 years ago like that. It's always at this time of year. We found that you just sight fish them. Look for the rollers, drive up to them then cut the motor. Within less than a minute they will start to boil right at the boat and anything, and I do mean anything, will catch them. We used some steelhead spinning rods I had on board and caught and released at least 200+ fish that day. We were having so much fun that we tried to find something they WOULDN'T bite on and had no luck. We thru Quickfish, salmon spoons, roostertails, and even some wobblers that had no action whatsoever. It was one of the most memorable trips I've had out there. I always tell myself to take the flyrod around this time of year so thanks for reminding me for this weekend's trips!

Let me tell you Captian Mike is one of the Best you'll find on the Oregon Coast anywhere. I have learned much over the years from him.

Trust me, our styles are completely different, but one thing about Mike, He is ALWAYS striving to learn more and learns from everything he encounters. That means your safety will always come first and when that's covered WATCH OUT he will get you into the FISH!!!

I continue to learn from Big Mike.
