Limiting Sea Sickness
Just came across this link:
http://www.abc.net.au/perth/stories/s412415.htm
Has some good all-around tips for helping to limit this unpleasant fact of fishing-especially the psychological.
Anyway, for those about to chum-we salute you!

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
I have found a gentically excellent propensity for sound inner ear and balance to be the best protection out there. I truly sympathize with those who get sick. Hang in there--er...on second thought, hang over the side please  !

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
Last May my gal and I were up in Sitka fishing for salmon. It was unbelievably rough, like with wind spray over the pilothouse rough. Ugly. Normally I am the queasy type, though usually I hold out but feel miserable anyway. My gal gets seasick pretty easily.
We both showed up in Sitka without our usual medications, so we decided to try Sea-Bands. I had used them before and they didn't seem to help much, but figured "what the heck." The bands that we got were very different than my old ones in that they were very tight, bordering on painful. They left little red indentations when you took them off.
The result? Nary a quease. We couldn't believe it. Two days of ugly winds, to the point where you had to hold on to the rails or cabin all the time. Even with that we had absolutely no sign of seasickness.
I think the tightness made the difference. Checking with an acupuncturist confirmed that to be effective, they have to be tight. I can hardly wait to try them again. Whoopee!!!

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
For me...I take the older NASA formula given to the Astronuts. .5mg of Dextroamphetimine and .4 scopalomine. Have it compounded to Portland. It's a schedule II class drug and you need a doctors prescription.
Don't leave home without it!!
Most any of the over the counter stuff I see others using makes them

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
My only time on big blue there were 16+ (by the time we were returning thru the jaws) swells and I was the only person who did not puke. We turned back as the conditions worsened. I did take some meclazine which I still have and am figuring I should take again. I figure I'd be fine w/o it but why not-it worked before. The others also took meclazine.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
I don't often get quesy but if conditions are rough then it is possible. I found that if I don't focus in on close objects I am much better off. Tying rigs on the bottom of the boat is a sure fire way to get sick for me so I always have enough pre-tied rigs. Also, staying out of the cabin and in the fresh air helps as well. Gas fumes and exhaust are another good way to bring up breakfast. Last year I tried Scopalomine (sp?) ie, the Patch behind the ear. This worked very well for me with only a dry mouth as a side affect. No sleepiness as with other medications. Another plus was that one patch will work for up to 3 days if you are careful not to wash or scratch it off. It is prescription only. I will be using it again this year as I was very happy with the results. I am just getting into more off-shore fishing. As soon as I finish outfitting my new (used)boat I hope to see some of you gents out there.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
I have been using a medication for a couple of years now that works good for me. I found it on the web and it is called Scopace. I found that if you take it the night before and about an hour before you get on the boat there are a lot less side effects. You have to get it through your doctor.Just my two cents worth.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
Hey Lingchaser - Welcome aboard! Thought you'd just sneak right in here and make a post huh? How about an intro post and a fishing story (with Salt on the Rim of course!)

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
Thanks alot for the great welcome. I guess I am alot like most of you guys( born to fish). I fish as much as I can and realy enjoy every bit of it. I fish mostly for sturgeon, striper, rockfish, halibut, and salmon. If it swims I will fish for it. Thanks again for the welcome and tight lines to all.
Gary.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
Welcome Lingchaser!
I hear-tell that ginger root is the best med once you start feelin' queasy. Not having trouble with seasickness myself, I dunno, but I have a friend who swears by it. Bet you can find ginger tablets or capsules in a health-food store. If you don't mind the flavor, I bet some sort of chewable would work better.
I'm sure going to try it on my kids next time we do a sea-trial with them.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
Ditto on the exhaust fume note.
I once fished a lumpy Columbia bar from a 26-ft. Chris Craft cruiser, with its exhausts bub-bub-bubbling away right at the waterline of the transom. You could see the steamy components of the exhaust boiling up over the transom into the cockpit, (along with the invisible, smelly components as well, of course.) :depressed:
Virtually everyone aboard, including several of us with some history of sea legs, was feeling less than stellar and let the record show that some chumming did, in fact, occur.
Most interesting, however, was that, three months later, when I was fishing from the North Jetty at Ilwaco, the exhaust smells from the salmon fleet, passing close by on its way home, began to give me a queezy feeling -- while I stood on very solid rock!

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
If you are prone to seasickness, pay attention to Captain Kujo. Dextroamphetamine and scopalimine is bullet proof. I don't get sick but have seen it work wonders. It's a great solution.

Re: Limiting Sea Sickness
I'll vouch for scopolomine - have used it on several occassions in rough seas and had no problems.
