OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Has anybody else looked at the bouy report for Stonewall Banks this morning?
Ewww!! It blew almost 20kts out there all night long! And the wave report
is showing 6 foot wind waves on 1.6(!) foot swells! Also the rating on the
wind waves is *steep*.
The 1.6 ft swells looks good ... it's just the rest of it!! According to the
Marine Forcast, it doesn't look a whole lot better for Saturday. Boy, I sure hope the
weather guessers are WRONG!

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
OK, I just went and looked at it again ... I guess that it was the bouy report
from last night that scared me!! NW turning to SW for Saturday ... just might
be a REAL nice day if the NW holds until Sat. morning and switches to SW
during the day on Saturday ... I shouldn't have looked at the bouy reports first!!
However, if the wind blows at about 20kts today and tonight out at the Banks, I
pridict a VERY unsettled ocean for tomorrow. I could be wrong, I haven't been doing
this for all *that* long (only about 30 years). I *will* be there in the morning to
put the "hairy eyeball" on it to see, however. As a matter of fact I'll probably be
out there at first light with the swell conditions that are predicted. Best way to know
what the ocean is gonna do is BE THERE! (IMHO)
OK, Let's go KILL SOME FISH!!
TONIGHT...NW WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... W
SWELL 4 FT AT 10 SECONDS.
SAT...SW WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... W
SWELL 4 FT AT 10 SECONDS. CHANCE OF
SHOWERS IN THE MORNING. SHOWERS IN THE
AFTERNOON.

23 MPH from due North and 6.3 at 7 seconds with a declining barometer, hmmmm.... I think I'll have to stay a little closer to home to conserve my limited resources and my precious, healing cargo . I sure had high hopes.
Small craft out of Newport and a Hazardous weather Outlook to the North.... I'm thinking Maybe (fairly big maybe) Three Arch Rock tomorrow and maybe a little Columbia River action today.
Play the weather Vortex game, 7 come 11....

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Thanks for verifying, Mark. I thought I was missing something there. Seems to me that the forecast just keeps improving for this weekend. Unsettled? Maybe, but Sunday's 'cast looked pretty ugly and even though the trend is still to the worse, it isn't as worse as it was
We're staying optimistic and planning on having a great weekend at the beach regardless of what the lake decides to do. Heck, herring in the bay and making shrimp pots back at the cabin will satisfy. I just need to breathe some salt air!
Popeye! You gonna be aboard Julie Rose III this weekend?

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
PM if you are going to be down to visit with Popeye, how about having your mate bring along some of his halibut rigs. I'm trying to figure out a better way to fish 25 people at a time and I need imput. I've done this for 10 years the same way and there has just got to be a better way. So if you are coming down, hope to meet up with you guys.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Assassin,
If you head down to Englunds this weekend report back to us. I heard that they are now selling frozen bait. If I recall they never did before it was only available at Harry's. Maybe some other Salty Dogs already know the answer, let us know.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Shoot! I just took a look at the weather bouys at both the South Jetty and Stonewall Banks
and the wind is a wailin'!! It's been blowing 20kts at the South Jetty for over an
hour already! :depressed:
Looks like the possibility of a lot of residule chop in the morning. Rats!! This was
going to be my first chance to chase Ling Cod this season!!

assAssin, do you think the wind will swing before first light? In any case it looks like the short chop blues in 'A' minor.

Hey John, you can still get tickets to the Blazer game tonight! Might need a 4th for golf tomorrow too.
Seriously, I just hope it calms down for the opener.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Hey, I got a question fer ya. Is "icky poo" a nautical term? I can't find it anywhere in my Chapman's or my Bowditch. I don't want to tell Cap'n Mike that the weather is icky poo unless that's real sailor talk.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Just got back from a run to Three Arch. What an ugly return in the Agitate Cycle. I wouldn't advise anyone in a smaller craft to set out until the wind changes. If you beat yourself up first by heading North first the drift down might not be to bad.
Well then there's that fast drift technique to contend with. 1 red rockfish and 5 undersize lings in 2 drifts is all we could handle. Have to finish cooking the 5 barnicaled Dungee's. To anyone who goes out tommorow -be safe.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Just got home... made it out of Newport at 9am and came back in an hour later. In a word.. UGLY... it was supposed to be 3 & 4... maybe of they were in meters.. Wind really picked up mostly witecaps by the time we left. Wind was 25mph+... some seas were well over 10' imho... had to hold onto the steering wheel with both hands so couldn't hold the yard stick.

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
This crazy vortex thingy! I was in Port Orford this morning and it was beautiful! Little to no waves, little to no breeze. By the time I got to Coos Bay around 11am, it was starting to get a little breezy. Early afternoon drove out to Coos Head and it looked like a herd of sheep out there! YUCK!
It's really calm here now (little to no wind). I'm heading out tomorrow with the intention of things calming down. We're suppose to have a 10k W wind tomorrow. 3ft wind waves and 5ft swells at 15 seconds. This should be do-able.
Wish me luck!

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
skein:
YES!! Icky poo IS a nautical term! When you become an old sea dog like me
you just KNOW these things!
Saturday morning wasn't too terribly bad. My 19yo boy and I ran North to the
Siletz reef and put down cod gear. I only had one line tied up so I was fishing
while the boy tied more gear. I had 7 or 8 cod on board when he finally got his
line tied (eight hooks) and dropped to the bottom. He no sooner hit the bottom
then he said "fish on". I told him to wait until I got my wire ready to go back
down before he pulled his ... he got 8 cod on his first pull. Four were keepers
and the other four were undersized! Next time he pulled his wire he had six
fish of which 4 were keepers! We couldn't hardly get our gear to the bottom
before we could feel the fish hitting the wire! It was *way* too cool!!
We stopped at 30 fish at 8:30 in the morning! I figured on catching 1/2 of
my monthly quota on Saturday and then saving the other half for later in the
month. We got almost 2/3rds of our quota by 8:30 Saturday and I'm convinced
that if we'd stayed another hour we could have taken the whole months quota (300 lbs.).
As it was, we were able to deliver 30 live ling cod, have the boat cleaned up,
talk to a couple of the charter skippers and were headed for Newport to spend our
hard earned bucks at Englunds by 11:00! What a gas!
DriftR:
I looked for frozen herring while I was there and didn't see any. I got to ordering
a new HSB cable for my Ratheon stuff and forgot to ask, so I'm not sure if they are
carrying herring now or not ... sorry about that!

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Mark: Congrats on your haul! We did get out on the Pilar Saturday morning. Spotted Tacklebuster heading north while we were on the highway and talked to him shortly after we launched out of Newport.
Wasn't a terrible day. Bad enough to keep us from running for the pile. But not bad enough to keep us from playing with the seabass that were thrashing and feeding on the surface, hanging out with Albacore Tuna Captain and the crew of the Blitz and limiting on rockfish and ling.
Fishing in that kind of chop is a little uncomfortable. I've got more than a bruise or two from bouncing around.
Let's hope for calm seas for halibut days!
Great visiting with Popeye, Julie and Albacore Tuna Captain! Sorry we missed you FA!

Re: OH, my ... kinda icky poo out there!
Yeh, it WAS pretty icky out there Saturday morning and I almost decided that I
didn't want to go all the way up to the Siletz reef, but the boy needed some money
for gas so...
Glad to hear you made it out and had some fun, anyway! I got an emergency call from
one of the guys up at Pacific City that he broke his dory trailer (one that my kids
built and I sold him last year) and had to leave before you got to Newport.
Oh, well, maybe next time.
Good luck this week on the flat ones! Looks like the weather is going to
cooperate (maybe). I hope Popeye is feeling better before it's time to go!
Sea ya,
