Re: Off to Neah bay for the opener update pics added
Good luck and have a safe voyage. I'll be rippin' into some white bellies and troll kings in Petersburg, AK next week. It's a terrible job, but someone's gotta do it.
Take care,
Ragnar

Re: Off to Neah bay for the opener update pics added
the opener was a success for us on the gun fighter. I will post pictures when I get tham downloaded. 72 square was our destination from the start for some monster lings and good old BFB. our largest ling was 25 Lbs and our largest BFB was 40ish. Capin Dan, Fishful thinking, Dans' dad, adn a couple of others went with us.
It was an interesting trip from the start. As we pulled in the the new Makah marina our boat was making the run up from PA. so we went to talk to the rest of the crews that are with the charter service They have 3-4 boats they run. Well, our skipper for the next day who we have been out with for the last 5 years pulls in and mentions that there is some stuff that needs to be checked as the boat just came out of refit so we let him get to work while we chatted with the other skippers. found out the gear we were to use aboard was Shimano Trinidads and new shimano roller rods.
Left the marina area to go eat and decided to give the Makah maiden another shot as last year it took 4 hrs to get food and the service was horrible. good food and great service was what we found. quite a change. Grilled oysters, steamer clams, mussels, halibut and chips, nachos and burgers. Sated and tired we went back to our rooms and had a beer and talked and joked until around 2100 then to bed for the 0400 wake up.
0400 go down to the store to settle up our debt and our skipper comes to find us with bad news. he thinks his gearbox is fried and wont be able to take us out. which is a bummer because we really enjoy his attitude on the boat and we always get our fish. He placed us on their big boat that had no clients but was going out on a family trip. thats OK but we really like the 6 pack boats better as we think we get more personalized service. Lucky for us we happen to run into the guy I went with 2 years ago (from the same outfit) and he says he has an empty boat and that we could go with him if we wanted. It didn't take long to come to the decision to go with him....
we leave the dock at 0530 get to our spot approx 40 miles out. first boat there and drop our lines. It was kinda slow at first but the Lings came first shortly followed by a few butts. it was scratch fishing for the Hali's but we got our limit on both Hali's and lings. Headed in and managed to convince the Captain to try for some seabass(cash talks).
We would have been better off going in early and cleaning up. all of the reefs we tried produced 3 seabass 1 china rock and 2 cabezon, not much considering we fished 6 rods for 2 more hours.
got back took photos and cleaned fish. Talked to the othe skipper that was still working feverishly on the boat, thanked him and wished them all well.
We finally got home around 2400 to Dan's and I finally made it home at 0115.
Even though we had to shuffle boats we had a great time. as always the folks were very nice and I like going out with them.

Rick, thanx for the report. That's the way it is with charters. Go with the guy you like. Just wait till Thursday with Cap't Bligh, my brother. If we have to play musical boats for you again, mine will be in hot standby on 'A' dock.
Ray are we going to christen your tub before we get it all bloody? I got a bottle of Sheaf Stout with 'Sea Lion' all over it.

Looks like a nice trip out to the most NW tip of Gods Country.
It's been ten years since I fished Neah Bay. Miss that part of the country badly!
Nice to see the Makah Cannibals didn't eat ya!

Re: Off to Neah bay for the opener update pics added
We just got back from Friday trip out of Neah Bay on Tommycod charters. If you ever need a good 6 man boat, these guys are first rate. We limited on Halibut and added a few lings to our tote. We did the Canadian trip so each of us got 2 halibut. It's a longer trip but well worth the effort. Next year you'll be able to purchase a Canadian License online for you Oregon guys. Re: Off to Neah bay for the opener update pics added
Yep, Halibut, Mussles, Osters in the shell for the barbi.
Rick thanks for taking it easy on me. We all know that every dog has his day. well that goes the other way too. It was one of those days for me I couldn't buy a fish. Finially My father whom has limited experience fishing this deep water stuff start hooking my fish and handing me the rod for the long reel up. I personally think that he was grateful. I will say this for Rick he had to listen to three old men whine and complain about how sore they were all the way hame.
Overall Great Trip with a great bunch of guys. Our halibut average 25lbs. Our lings were really nice with six of them totally huge. I think that we wound up with more Ling than halibut. Man those things can pull and fight.
Charter was the Alaska far west fish camp. (Gun slinger, or gunfighter
Skippers Tony phillips my first recommendation.
with Gary being every bit as good plus side for Gary is his music.
Book out of Neah Bay Charter and tackle Co.

www.neahbaycharters.com
If you manage to book the boat ask about 72 square it is worth the extra distance in my opinion. I agre with Rick I recommend the six pack boats over the big boats.
If you go tell Tony the Portland boys (Dan Neal) Recommended him
Dan
