Ok- I\'m even more worried now!
I'm still not believing that a Striped Marlin is going to peel you on even a small 50lb gear reel, but every day I get more worried about these dang Tuna. He's talking about Yellow Fin, not Bluefin, but this sure sounds a lot like some hit and run stories I'm hearing from around here.

    700 yds of 50lb mono! :depressed: Only a 150 lb feeesh!
(Thanks Keta- it was from that link you posted earlier).

Re: Ok- I\'m even more worried now!
Mel, it's easy. Just fish in water that is only 150 fathoms or less. 900 ft, that's like 15 minutes of reeling the spit out jig.
There is a distinct advantage to using a small, maneuverable boat to chase swift big game like TUNA! and marlin. You can turn and chase the fish. The big boats just plow backwards after em. I'm certain that If I hook up, with a little patience and some luck the fish can be played to the boat. That's where the fun begins. I have no idea how to land 200 lbs of bluefin or 7 foot of striped marlin.
But if I can touch the leader I'll consider the brute beaten and count coup on it.
If you haven't had a big gnarly albacore peel off 1/2 or more of your reel you have that to look forward to. A 35 lb fish can pull pretty dang hard and swim 30 to 40 mph, pass the boat or run right at it. Somehow we get those bad boys to the rail.
Come on Bill show us what you got.

Marlin, now there is a fish I want to hook into. Albacore are a blast to reel in. We go out for them each year on the Irish, but I think we want to take our boat this year for them. I have been reading all your post and stories on you guys going out for tuna. Sounds fun I love seeing the jumpers, then fish on!! Whoooweeeee...

Re: Ok- I\'m even more worried now!
I just wanna see who it is that's hitting my 300 # test tuna cord and snapping it off like it was a piece of string! It happens every year and I know it's not a shark because it happens too quick! Something is really moving when it hits! So it's either a big bill fish or maybe a huge tuna! I'm fishing more now with poles than hand lines so maybe soon we will discover who the blanky-blank line destroyer is.

I was fishing west of Heceta Banks two years ago, and had TWO 300# break offs! The water temp was 68F. Only caught 9 tuna, but they were all over 30#. HMMMMMM

Re: Ok- I\'m even more worried now!
Bait boy can handle anything , right. I thought id just get to reel em in. then let the assigned capt.(Bait Boy) deal with the problem. Ha, Ha.
Actually that sounds like a fun fish problem. id. p.
