Re: I Clean Fish pt. 2
Maybe a little background info will help, I worked in AK last summer as a Deckhand/ Guide in training for a fishing lodge on kodiak Island. I take orders very well and I learn very fast. If need be I know how to run a boat just as a safety back up. I am 22 years old and love fishing. Anyone want to teach, I am more than willing to learn!
Thanks

Re: I Clean Fish pt. 2
dcgrav,
Congrats on getting a ride or two for some longfin chasin.
As a boat owner who takes lots of different people out every year, let me offer you some tips as to being a good passenger.
1- When the trips over, don't wait for a fuel bill, offer money up front, cash in hand. The gesture means a lot to most boat owners, (and demonstrates your sincerity), and most will tell you to wait until the boat is refueled to give you a split dollar figure. When they do offer up a number, an extra buck or two will go a long way to demonstrating that you truly understand the TRUE operating costs of an ocean going boat.
2- If you have ANY questions about the use of any equipment or gear, ASK the owner how to use it, don't assume you know how to use or operate something unless you are 100% sure. (broken/messed up stuff will most likely get you in the black book and never asked back)
3- If you plan on smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking anything with alcohol in it, ask if it's OK up front. (The rules on my boat are no smoking, chewing or booze until the boats back to the dock, tied up and cleaned up.) Some owners may not care, but most do.
4- If you plan on bringing anything but a day pack, (fishing gear), make sure the captain knows about it. I have had guys show up thinking they need everything but the kitchen sink, they don't.
5- If the captain starts the day with a safety speech about emergency procedures, pay attention and ask any questions about anything you don't understand 100%. I have never met a boat owner/captain that ever was irritated by someone asking about safety procedures. Your life and others may depend on it.
6- When it comes time to clean up, ASK the owner what he wants done first. Many owners have a procedure to cleaning their boat after a blood bath at sea,(aka tuna fishing), and what makes sense to you may be completely opposite from what your host wants done.
7- Very important, NO BANANAS!!
8- No matter how bad fishing is, don't get an attitude. Nobody likes getting skunked, but most of the time that's just fishing.
Have a great time, take lots of pictures and post a great report.

I will completly agree with the above. Please ask about the capt. rules for the boat. I once had a person ask if it was ok to smoke on the boat... hesitantly I said OK, follow up by telling him if he wants to smoke anything he would need to do so about 50 feet behind the boat. He decided that he could hold off for a few hours of fishing

I can recommend Dave as crew. Had him out this summer for halibut and he was great.
Dave...would have had you out for tuna before now, but it seems like the OTC has taken up alot of available bandwidth. We will get out before the seasons over.
