Default Salty Run

Alright dogs, the pup is ready to come out and play.

Looks as if we have some awesome conditions coming up for this Friday and Saturday. Looks as if 5 feet combined for Friday and 6 for Saturday. The plan is to hop the bar at Newport on Friday and do a little bottom fishing on some near shore reefs. If everything checks out, I plan on a rock pile run for Saturday. If I am reading this correct, looks as if we have a low tide Friday morning around 6:30 A.M?

Looks as if I'll hop the bar around 7:00 and head South for the rock fish. Hope to see some of you guys/gals out there

My girl wants in on this too. I don't dare leave her at home again.

Lets wait out the weather vortex and maybe we'll get back out there again on Saturday.

High is coming in- 74 deg in the valley Friday, no rain till Sun (showers?). Looks like you'll need the Sunscreeen out there on that flat water!
Not a good evening to have the antennas up tonight. Channel 8 was showing a live shot of a funnel cloud "towards Macminville" from whereever they were. Been a heck of a lightning show here for the last hour or so!

Well boys and girls, I think I am in for Friday and maybe Saturday. The wife is going in for a "procedure" Wednesday and we are hoping she will be recovered by Thursday night so we can get out Friday. If not she might want me and the boy to go away so she can have some peace and quiet. I hope she is up to a little bar hopping with me.
I'll keep ya posted and I hope to see you out there.
Still have last minute stuff to do.... I don't think it ever ends...
I could go right now and do well but I want to add a few items to make the fishing just that much nicer...
I plan to spend Wednesday afternoon and most of the day Thursday finishing up the details.

Looks like Saturday will be the day. I will probably get my feet wet a little on Friday with the near shore reefs but will head to the pile on Saturday. I have plotted and ran the course on my GPS now about a dozen times and can see it in my sleep. What time are you guys planning to be at the ramp?

I wanna leave the house a little early that morning to stop off at Otis for a little chow. Anyone know when they open? Maybe some of us can hook up there for a pre slaughter breakfast

Looks as if I'm gonna see the mighty Pilar in action. I would like to get a look at the vessel that's gonna take us to flattie town in a couple of weeks. I hear the fish gather for the Fish Whisperer

I'll be working on the boat all day Thursday between comforting the wife.
I have high hopes for Friday and Saturday.
Chris, you might want to take it easy on that breakfast or at least get something that is good enough to taste twice Don't ask me how I know this... If you don't pick it up sooner I'll have that 6/0 for you. Give me a call.
There is a good chance that I'll sleep on the boat and be ready bright and early Saturday if I get out Friday. I hpoe the wife is up to it.... Time will tell...

Okay, I'm going to give it another try. Hopefully I can last a little longer out there this time. I'm hoping that it is like anything else......the more often you do it, the longer you last.

Ray,
I'll hook up with you out there on Saturday and grab that reel.

Pilar and the rest of you dogs- I may be way off base here but let me run my bottom fish rigging past you guys. I want to use Salmon poles with Amb. 6500 reels spooled with 30 pound braid. Couple of shrimp flies and about 2 feet below the last fly a jig head with a plastic swimmer. Sound about right? How are you guys trolling for nooks? Big banana weight, fish flash, and mooching rig with whole herring? I don't have a down rigger so how much weight is needed and how far down do we need to be? Back to the bottom fish, how much ounces should the jig head be? Sorry for all the questions but I plan on hammering fish, not wishing I had the right stuff. Oh yea, how deep are we talking at the pile for depth?

Tacklebuster - I don't have a ton of experience, but limited every time I went last year with a banana weight and whole herring on a rotary salmon killer. No downrigger, no flasher, no glitz or glammor. Dropped to the bottom and cranked up about 15-25 turns (depending on my mood )

Of course, I was on the right boat

Thanks PM, do you remember how many ounces you guys were running? I have to go pick up some gear but don't have a clue how heavy to go

Jen, it just wasn't the same without you last Sun. I'm scared to tell the girlfriend about this weekend, three weeks in a row might be a little too much for her to handle but I think I'll try. You might see me fishing with sun glasses on not because of the sun, but to hide the black eye I might be covering.

Hey Chris, read your email and your rsvp for Pilar. There is a list of stuff to have for fishing these trips.

Your salmon rig will work fine for salmon and bottom fish. A halibut hookup may require a post fishon underwear change as your rod will make all kind of noises you are not used to hearing. It may even go *pop*. The bottom fish rig you describe is my favorite. The jighead is anywhere from 6 to 16 oz depending on depth and drift. Don't buy the heads, I have a bunch with no grubs on em. Maybe we can swap heads for grubs. Use the twin tails in glow in the dark, dark green and oil color. Kalin's Big Ugly grubs work for the jumbo jig heads > 16oz. I have ordered 10 of these in glow in the dark and should get them soon.

Salmon is all about feeding fish. You can use all that jewelry on you rig if you want but a sinker with a bead chain on the mooching leader end, an RSK and a 3 to 4 foot 40# mono leader with 5/0 - 4/0 hooks on it will work only slightly less efficiently than 2 stick of dynamite and a net.

Salmon mooching leads we use range from 4 oz for shallow work to 16 oz for 250' of water. I carry 5 of every size between those two extremes. Last weekend with a stiff east wind the weight was 16 in 200' and 12 in 160'.

The depth for bottom fish is between 130 and 200 at the pile. Typical Salmon depths are 200 on down to 300. I have caught many kings in the wake of the boat while trying to let my down rigger out, so don't neglect the top 50 feet of water.

You need waypoints Tacklebuster if you want to catch and not just fish.

Those can be had for a small fee.

Gregotis - that's awful nice of you to say

I dunno what to tell you about your mate. Make sure you take her out on a date? (a REAL one - NOT a TA meeting!)

Here's a tip for ya, though: If you see her pull her fist back and start to wind up for the swing, turn your head! That way, she won't be able to clock you dead center, giving you TWO black eyes.

Hope to see ya out there!

Hopefully the hardest part will be getting the burgee to fly straight. See ya out there...
