Re: what do ya call that thing
I'd call it a "stainless cap and sleeve going thru a hole on the bow where you feed the anchor rope and chain thru"
Some folks prefer a "deck pipe", Get the SS steel one with the lathcing hinged lid. The ones with the cap on the chain tend to "go away" (the lids).

Back to Sailor School Keta! A chock is what hold an anchor (or dinghy or ??) down on the deck!

Re: what do ya call that thing
AAARGGGGG! Well scuttle me butt!
"Lastly, it is important to take precautions against the single most destructive force while at anchor in a high wind: chafe. Tape or tie chafing gear elk hide, canvass, sail cloth, or even old blue jeans wrapped in duct tape onto the nylon rode where the line passes through the BOW CHALK . Remember that the nylon will stretch a lot, so the chafing gear should cover the rode well inboard. The line may have to be taken up from time to time to keep the chafing gear at work."

Re: what do ya call that thing
Hawse would work for me, but it usually refers to the holes in the sides where you feed the dock lines through (hawse holes) or on really big boats- maybe where the anchor rode feeds out the bow?

Re: what do ya call that thing
OK Keta- but it's spelled "Line Chock" as in.. "Chromed Bronze 4" and that's not what he was asking for. Chalk is what you write on the blackbard with right? Dang Salers just cant spel wrth a darn!
Then of course there's the other kind:
"Polished chrome-plated bronze chocks hold small size fluke-type anchors. Fit Danforth anchors to 16lb. and Fortress Anchors to 10lb. (FX-16)...."
This is fun. Let's have another question!

And when you're done with that, describe the function of the "bull nose" and where is it?

Re: what do ya call that thing
Ha- you're on... oops- no fair only one question at a time!
Gunnels that thingy runs down the side of the boat so you can mount your guns on it! Well ok- these days it's rod holders and crab pullers and barbecues. Now where did it come from... be right back!
Gotta think on that bull nose to... hmmm I know that from somewhere!
Fun and educational... what more do you want!

Re: what do ya call that thing
OK- official version of gunwale (or gunnel)
Etymology: Middle English gonne-wale, from gonne gun + 1wale; from its former use as a support for guns
Or gunnel can b:
: a small slimy elongate north Atlantic blenny (Pholis gunnellus); broadly : any fish of the family (Pholidae) to which the gunnel belongs
Wonder if they fight good and what they taste like?

Re: what do ya call that thing
Nope- to late, can't think of it or find bull nose. Bull nose is a shape more than a thing (as in mouldings) but can't place it on the nautical list or the boat. You didn't throw a snailboat thing out here as bait did ya? Hmmm... a tool maybe?
PS- here's a site you can enjoy folks:

Re: what do ya call that thing
How about a "Monkeys Fist" ??? What is it and what is it used for and can you make one? (Professionally licensed skippers are not eligable for this contest).

Monkey fist is the end of a heaving line. Couldn't even begin to tie one.

Re: what do ya call that thing
Isn't the monkey fist used to throw a line back through the "hoop" on a sailboat's mast? Remember, it's not nice to kick salty pups.

Re: what do ya call that thing
Bull nose: a closed chock at the head of the bow on the forecastle deck.
Bullnose: An opening at the very tip of the bow through which lines for tying up to a dock were run. When in heavy seas and the bow buried itself itself in green water, the bullnose produces quite remarkable jets of water.

Very good birdnest (unless you made it up  ). You mind revealing your source(s). Always looking for places to learn!
