Default Odell Report Aug 15-18

Just got back from taking my dad fishing for his birthday. We didn't fish it too hard, as it was a big family gathering, but did sneak about for about 10 hours over three days. Not red hot, but steady. We put 57 kokanee on ice, and they were fat and healthy. Looks like they are really feeding heavy and putting on weight. No signs of turning at all. A few 8"ers, lots of 10-11", and a few 12".

The algea really cleared up a lot, in spite of 69 degree surface temps.

Great mid day bite -- 10am to 2pm seemed best. Fish (biters) 38 to 55 feet. Light orange was our best color (crappie tubes), and shrimp scented corn dyed bright green was the best of 4 color/scent combinations we tried, though at times blue got them going again when it slowed. 1.2 was the best speed.

Today we had a third join us, so I rigged one rod with 3 oz crescent sinker, Mack's Flashlites, and a red beaded spinner with gold blade. Just for grins I ran a single hook on the spinner and trailed a pair of bare hooks 14" behind, baited with one kernal of corn on each hook. Put a bobber stop at 100' so I wouldn't have to count "pulls". Hooked 7 or 8 on that rig, all on the trailing hooks with no "lure". Hmmm.

Go get 'em, and keep those reports coming.

Moknots, You know the drill... who got more fish, you or dad? Sounds like you guys had a great time. I'm always all ears when it comes to the various contraptions you come up with to put fish in the boat. Thanks for all the details, great post.

Were you using a 10' rod and a really long handel on the net? Thanks for the report.

That is really good news. After the derby I may stay an extra day to fish Odell.
Thanks for the report, ET

SBullets -- My Dad of course. It was his 73rd birthday, but you'd have thought he was 12 years old. It was awesome! Twisted -- 8' rod. What's a long handled net for??? We just launch them into the boat. I'll think about that 10' rod though -- might reduce the number that bang into the back of the outboard. This trip underscores the merit of a well timed fling vs. messing with the net -- we had at least 10 fish pop off, but still land in the boat.

Thanks for the excellent info, moknots. Nice job on the kokes too! It's good to hear that the algae situation is correcting and the fish are still prime. Gotta make another trip over there before it's curtains for the season. Did you try... or notice any jigging action going on? Just curious.

I saw some jigging going on, but don't know how they did. Not many boats fishing, most likely due to the algea warning.
