Default New Ifish Salty Dog fundraiser

Looking for ideas on how to generate funds for the "New VHF for Pilar" fund.

Any ideas?

Bake sale? Sell those funky brownies they used to have at the Oregon country fair a few years back.
Strange, but people sure seemed to love them.

Skein, there is but notice my red face. I cannot get a radio to work in my boat and be reliable. I've gone through like 4 of them now. The Icom mentioned in the other thread looks good, I should get one.

Yesterday Rod called me repeatedly during the very rough trip in and I could not get the damn radio to transmit. I had to call his wife at home and get her to call his cell phone to let him know we were ok.

5 minutes later the microphone started working again.

Thanks for your concern Rod and your companionship on the big blue lake. Small boats working together is what makes this whole deal happen.

The story is Pilar has been going thru "used" broken VHF's for the last couple years and it's time he got a new one. On the current VHF he has a transmit problem. We lost contact with him on the way in yesterday in some not so fun water and tuna season is just around the corner.

A good VHF is probably THE most important tool you have. I told Pilar yesterday, I'd much rather have a bad motor than a bad VHF, cause at least I can call for help.

I think the appropriate saying for this situation is "If he won't feed himself, then WE must force feed him!"

Let's think of something creative. I don't know what it is yet but perhaps a $1 for every extra canary fish you catch this year? That'll give us incentive to stop catching them and also serve as a good means to generate funds for the new VHF.

Give me some ideas?

EDIT: Oh yeah, that means I've already put $2 in the kitty from yesterday!

Pilar:

Had the same problem with my aft radio on Sunday!! Every time I would hit the mic
the radio would shut off. When I released the trigger, the radio would come back on
but switched to channel 16. My aft radio is
exposed to the elements so I figured that maybe it was a dirty power issue. I pulled
the power plug and sprayed both sides of the plug with that miracle drug ... WD40!!
Plugged it back together, switched it on an BINGO, I was able to transmit again!!

Earlier in the day I had been talking to Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay and they had
told me to switch to channel 80. I did, but when I keyed the mic I lost 'em! Kinda
   I had to stop my downriggers ascent and run into the
wheel house to talk to 'em on the forward radio. Oh, well, live and learn!

Pilar-
Get an SWR meter. It will show transmit signal strength in watts. West marine 45 bucks. Better yet find someone else with radio problems and get them to buy it and then borrow it. Most radio problems are a bad connection somewhere, usually the antenna cable solder connection.

Many problems of no transmission are not mic related, but antenna related. Just because you receive, does not mean your antenna is OK. And 99% of antenna problems are that antenna cable coax connector. The other easy one is your power connection for the radio might be corroded. The radio works fine, until you try to transmit, at which point it gets flaky because this is your only real power draw on the radio.

Just got a boaters world flyer. They have an icom waterproof (fixed mount which is unusual to find in waterproof) and I think it has DSC for $199. If you want I can get you the model info when I get home tonight. Never mind- came right up on the web:

Icom has out done themselves this time. The Icom IC-M402 is a compact 25 Watt transceiver. Completely submersible to J.I.S. 7 standards, the M402 is waterproof to 3' for 30 minutes. Icom designed the radio with a Smart Mic which means there are channel controls and a 16/9 emergency button built into the mic. The built-in DSC allows you to send a mayday distress message at a push of the button along with the current lat/long position as well as vessel identification. Additional DSC features, such as private calling and position polling are also standard. Receives all Marine VHF Channels. Other features include: Selectable dual/tri watch; Tag scan system, which allows you to pick what channels you want to scan; Normal scan; and Command Mic capability.

Thanks Mel, that is the one I was looking at. The antenna never changed for 4 radios. It is an 8' Shakespeare, 6DB. Maybe that is the problem. How can you tell Kurt?

Hey Kurt, when are you getting that meter? Will you show me how to use it?

Pilar- You can take your radio out and take it to Rogers- they'll bench test it (for free probably- they did mine and I dodn't buy it there). I didn't have them check my Antenna cause it wouldn't come off without cutting off the connector, but I'll bet they can check it too!

PS- those new solderless connectors are supposed to work real good. I'd go with one next time I have to put in an Antenna.

Mel, where is Rogers?

I can make the connector again if it gets the problem diagnosed and fixed. So take both and see if they can find the problem.

Rodger's is on Marine drive, just downstream from the 42nd St. boat ramp. You can't miss them, they're on the north side of the road with a big sign.

Rogers Marine Electronics on Marine drive, just North of the end of the airport runway. If the planes are taking off to the NW - hold your ears!
Real close to Salties (the restraunt- not the dogs).
Babcoes (sp?) Yacht sales is right before.. hmmm.. pier 1 repair place) I think?

Tell Marty "B" I sent ya and say hi for me! (there's two Marty's there).

PS- John... leave your checkbook, cash and credit cards at home when you go out to Rogers. Not as bad as going to a boat show, but it's close! Plan on spending at least two hours pushing all the buttons on all the functional display models.

I'll hold your cash if you'd like!

PSS- they might give you an equivalant price on that icom if you let em know what you can get it for (or close anyway). Nice to buy at a place that can fix it too if need be! Just in case your radio is shot! They got the antenna's too!

I've got a little JRC that's still in the box and you're welcome to use it if you can't get anything else by rodeo-time. I don't have a clue how good it is, but you're welcome to it if it will help.

All we would have to do is have a friendly little fishing derby, say the opening day of Halibut?
Just between friends. $5 to get in with half the proceeds to go towards the radio with the other half split between largest Halibut, Largest Salmon and ??? smallest chicken?
Whaddya think?
