Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
Can I assume there are other boats heading out of Newport for tuna on Monday? I prefer not being the only boat out there possibly as much as 50 miles. Spoonplugger, Sea Gypsy, Fishtails, ??? anybody going out on Monday? I'll be out there. At least as of Sat evening the NOAA forecast looks very good for Monday (although WetSand shows much less favorable. On this one I'm guessing NOAA is the more correct since the ocean looks like its beginning to lay down on Sunday)

Sorry Steve, not gonna be able to make a run on Monday. It's a work day for me. (probably the only one for the next week+). Still hoping things continue to lay down more this evening to open up the Depoe Bay bar by tomorrow morning. Was down to 26' restriction this afternoon.

If I can get the day off, & the Ocean is nice, I'm in, but not sure where yet.

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
Sounds good. The last time I was out was this last Tuesday, August 12, I was at 44 34 x 125 00 which was about 50 miles out of Newport, got 15. All but 3 were big. Seems like that heading took me right over the rock pile and I ended up about 15 miles south west of the ranch. We were still picking up a few tuna about 5 miles closer as we trolled back in. Anyway, how far I go on Monday will depend on what my temp gauge tells me, what the water looks like, and what the Sunday night tuna reports are on ifish. Seems like they keep getting closer because 10 days ago I had to go 60 miles and got 14. Not a huge count but some of those tuna this year are verifiable pigs. Thank goodness my boat gets about 4 mpg. The 50 mile out trip cost me $127 for fuel including trolling around for about 4 hours.

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
Steve, I'm hoping to get out Monday. I'll be getting back to my place in Lincoln City late Sunday. I've got fuel in my truck and need to put about 50 more gallons in the boat to top off the tank. I hope to leave Depoe about 6 a.m. or so. I'm hoping that FisherJack, my neighbor in Salem, will be able to join me. We are going to make the final decision tomorrow. We'll keep you posted.

Wak-- There were 3 larger charters, myself, and a couple of small boats around Nelson today. Everyone did about the same I think at around the 20 number. The Umatilla was there, and perhaps they did better than the Siameze and Tacklebuster, but not that I heard.
The number I did hear was of 45 fish or more out at the 125 06 x 44 37 area.
We hit jumpers right off the bat, and hooked up some on swimbaits. Troll fish the rest of the day except for 1 or 2 I hooked on iron.
When the big lighting bolts of lighting started coming down hard, the bite totally shut off for pretty much everyone.
Could be that the charter did 40+ at Nelson, but none of the other boats did.
Be careful out there tomorrow everyone. I'm probably just missing a great day, but the forecast sure looks suspect to me..... Claiming NW wind tonight, backing to SW after midnight....... It was blowing SW when I came in today at 2:30. Blowing SW right now...... Buoy says that there is a NW wind wave, but showing blowing out of the SW? I don't comprehend.

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
I can't go even though I have the day off. Taking the family to Seaside. Was at the South Beach cleaning station this evening and the guys there gave 44.36 by 125.02 as the good place to be. Sounds about right where they've been for the past two weeks. Dang it, a 1 and 3 forcast too.

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
Tough decision. I pulled the plug on my tuna trip this morning. Monday morning at 5:15 I am sitting at my kitchen table in my Yachats beach house looking at occasional lightening striking out in the ocean and hearing the crack of thunder. Big time bummer. I hope those who choose to go are safe out there.

My guess is it was a good call, Steve.
We had nasty Thunder storms blow through all night here in Depoe Bay, with lightening strikes VERY close. Shook the windows in the house multiple times.
I'm guessing that today is going to be a rough day on the water. Just hope that all who did go today are safe!

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
I pulled the plug with my customers for today on Saturday night. With what is coming for tomorrow, with a South wind.... better to miss a decent day then to have those Southerlies roll in early early and wreak havoc while on the water.

Re: Going for tuna out of Newport Monday
Good call on the cancels. Live to fish another day. Pretty iffy forecast and NOAA cannot seem to get the call straight this season.
